It depends - am I listening to learn or is it external chatter?

Retention of what was read has always been subjective. I do know that if I like the subject, it helps and if I don't, it hinders. Passion makes a difference

If I really hear something I absorb it but I probably retain less than 20%.

Actually, we absorb a lot more than we think we do. The problem with that is, a lot of it is not intentional or positive. LOL
If we just hear, it is about 20%. If we see and hear, it's more than double that.
I remember Dale's Cone of Experience/Learning from when I first got into radio . . . that's why repetition is so important in advertising.

My staff tells me that it is in direct proportion to how much coffee I have had (stimulants are great for ADHD).
I can tell when they think that I am not focusing when someone drops another cup of coffee off on my desk.

Most people are thinking about what THEY are going to say, when it is their turn to speak.

Listening is different than hearing. so I agree with Gabe Sanders and Lyn Sims . It depends upon alot of stuff.

It depends.
Who's talking.
My interest level.
My commitment to the speaker or the topic.
Ohh ---- look --- bright and shiny object.
Huh?

Dorie,
I try to really “hear” a person, the context and story behind what they are saying. Sometimes that is easier than other times.

blah, blah, blah...blah, blah and you retain 0%
Others - you hear their words and retain 100%

I'd say I'm an 80% person. I can tell you what the people at the table three over from us where discussing at dinner last night. I am deaf in one ear and have extraordinary hearing in the other and an exceptional memory
900,128
Unfortunately most of what we hear is not worth absorbing. We have to pull out the "nuggets".
1,502,998
A lot more of music than speech, but I'm always surprised at just how much I'll remember and of obscure stuff too.
290,969
I think it depends on the circumstance (meaning are you focused on what is being said, or distracted by something or someone in the background) and the person (some only hear half of what someone says, as it's either too long a conversation and there isn't back and forth dialogue, or they just catch the beginning and start thinking of their response) Dorie Dillard. Now how much you retain of what is being said is probably based on it's importance to you. And if you are 'talking over someone', then nothing is heard, learned, nor retained - and rude.

Dorie Dillard valid point. In our circle, it's common. For consumers, we use this word to impress them..

I retain a good bit of it though maybe not every detail I would say 50% or more.
