In California, property taxes are impacted by Proposition 13 which typically limits increases but our state is famous(or is it infamous?) for finding other interesting streams of revenues for their coffers.

Depends on the property - we have other types of assessments as well that affect the sale

Our home values have gone up nearly 10% per year over the last couple of years, taxes are definitely increasing!

I live in Florida. We have the Save Our Homes Constitutional Amendment. The assessment on your principal residence/homestead cannot increase more than 3% per year.

Gone up. Here in Durham, NC the assessments are only performed every eight years, and during the past eight years, we have been through the entire cycle of bust and boom.

Hi Diana - We don't check that for our clients, but we do send out a mailing offering to pull comps if they would like to protest. We get a dozen or so each time, and they appreciate the help.

Diana Dahlberg Around here when the tax rate goes down, the assessment goes up. When values go down the tax rate increases. Since they always seem to be a year behind, they went up this year.

Gone up & I don't think it's right. During the downturn years sellers were being 'over taxed' because tax rolls didn't follow market value for years. We are being reassessed this year & it looks like trouble.
We have a great feature in our MLS tax base that gives us the last 3 years taxes + or - . It's fast to check.

In my jurisdiction, property assessments and property taxes are handled by different authorities. Whether either goes up or down depends on the particular property, assessment issues, municipal or regional government and other factors.

Good morning Diana. Both will happen, it depends on the type of property, but in most cases it will go up.
