I did online at AR with help from all willing AR ambassadors.
Actually inside my car during lunch. I was the lucky ones.

good question, considering we're bombarded with students....
I took my real estate course when God was a child in 1978.... and at that time, we had the option of taking the Broker's exam...and that's what I did.... the course was one night a week for 10 weeks.... and the exam, obviously, was a standard fill in the circle with a #2 pencil and then wait for another 4 or 5 weeks for the results to come in the mail!!!
I passed the first time, and I was the first one finished....

I took an overview class once a week for a few Saturdays and then studied from the book and took practice exams. Failure was not an option because I'd be disappointed in myself if I failed. I passed.
I found a spelling error on one of the exam questions. I brought it to the attention of the test staff and sadly, no one cared.

I can't remember what it cost but not as much today. It was almost 3 months & we met in the basement of the Holiday Inn from 6 to 9. I believe it was 2 a week.
Passed 1st time out in 1981. Then the market went belly up with interest rates at 18%. Started all over again in 1983.
As Sam said, then for my brokers I used the Utah School of RE.

I took a Real Estate class as one of my electives at Southern NH University in 1985 at the age of 17. The professor when learning I would be taking the exam at the end made a frequest example of me in a class of 21 to 40 years olds. I got an A in the class, my 40 plus hours of c;ass time to take the test. Took it at 18 and passed. I went back 2nd semester to show him my license.

Six weeks in a small class here in Fort Wayne in 2007. I've never been a good student, but I passed on the first try. I've used about 5% of what I learned in that dreaded class in my true real estate career. Those classes teach you how to pass a test, not be a successful Realtor.

I took mine shortly after Barbara Todaro ... in 1980. God was a teenager by then. LOL I studied at night with cassette tapes in the basement of a real estate office, as time allowed from my day job. I was the first one done with the test and had to double check that I didn't miss a section. I passed the first time.

I used an online course (Allied School of Business). I committed 4 hours a day 5 days a week, for two months. I then did my review course with a two-DVD set, it took about two days. The cost was around $900.
I passed my state test on the first try, missing only two questions and ahead of all other applicants. In fact, the proctors were surprised when I came out of the room so quickly. One question was not covered on my course work and the other one, I had right the first time and went back and changed it to the wrong answer.
Having said all that, I'm a good self-learner. It's all a matter of preference, but I would recommend online courses for anyone that's disciplined enough to commit to it. It's less expensive and the material and course design were excellent.

Apparently lots of smarty pants here, I did a self study program while working full time, I spent 2-3 hours a night for 12 weeks that I paid $599 for, and then took the test that I felt I was very prepared for, passed the general but missed the state by 1 point. I retook the state a week later, which was the soonest it was allowed and passed.
On a side note when I went in to get my fingerprints at another real estate school they received a phone call that I could not help but over hear, it went something like this, "Hello" then she whispered to the rest in the office "It's him again" " whats that, you did not pass? How many times has it been now that you have taken the test ..."74" was the answer, I looked up and asked them to please give me that persons name, because if he ever does get licensed and I do a deal with him, I want to make sure to watch every thing he does.

Classroom at the Board with an Orlando school that has a great reputation and has been in business for years. It was nights and weekends, 2 or 3 weeks, not sure as this was back in '08. Cost was higher than online, but don't recall the exact amount. Passed the EOC exam and State exams both on the first try.
The sad part is that there were 7 in my class and only 3 of us passed both exams the first time. Two of the others never managed to pass the EOC exam, even after retaking the course so dropped out. The other 2 eventually managed to pass, both had to retake the course and failed the State exam the first time so very dismal results.
Thjs was in '08 and, as of 2-3 years ago, I am the only one from our class still practicing RE.

It was at the local board in 2005; 45 hours Mon through Friday and 2.5 hour test on Saturday. Took an hour and fifteen minutes and turned it in and asked if I was sure; go back to your seat and will call when scored. Ten minutes later called to the front and told you passed with none wrong! Monday morning took the state test and had my license the next week. I know it was not expensive.

Apr 2014 - Mar 2015 via Kaplan Real Estate, online. It ran $700something for 6 months of access then I had it extended another 6 months for $300something. I kept letting "life and laziness" - and even some philosophical differences with the way things are done in the industry - get in the way.
All told I did the actual 168 credit hours of coursework and the exam prep across only about 3 or 4 of those 52 weeks of access. {rolls eyes at self}
I passed the CO and National exams in April 2015 first try. Then I enjoyed the heck out of my summer and fall and finally interviewed then selected a brokerage then submitted for my associate broker's license this past winter.
When I lay it all out like that it sounds like a lot of time wasted. Which is true. If I'd fast-tracked myself I could be almost 2 years in by now. On the other hand, by the time I actually got my license this past December I was 100% sure about my decision to jump into the pool and had pre-shaped a lot of how I plan to do business. :0)

I've had two license in two states. The first time I took the RE exam was in 1991 - Orlando FL: I took a class through the community college and then a weekend refresher right before I took the test. You see, it was only offered so often. We had to go to a big warehouse facility. I don't recall where but, think of a large room at the fairgrounds with tables crammed in and a several hundred people taking the exam at the same time. Back then, we took the test with a #2 pencil. This test was in 3 parts and you could re-take the part you didn't pass. You could pay a big fee to have someone grade your test right then and there, or you could wait until it was sent away and your results mailed to you. Since I didn't need my license right away, I waited. My results came in the mail the day before my wedding! Not wanting anything to damper my spirits, I tucked the envelope in a drawer. When we returned from our honeymoon in Jamaica late in the night, the first thing I did was pull that envelope out to find that I had passed with flying colors!
The second time I took the RE exam was in 2007 - Raleigh, NC: I took the class through a local RE school. My kids were 2nd and 4th grade. I knew I had to pass or I couldn't face my kids. This time the test was computerized. You could only miss so many questions. Once you finished or failed too many questions, the screen flashed your result in front of you. I did pass with an 88 or 89. My kids comments were: "Mom, that's just a 'B'!"

My real estate school was amazing. The first 2-weeks was the stuff required for the exam, and I passed the first time. The second 4-weeks were intense sessions on financing, contracts (they were 2-pages of tiny print and we could recite them at the end), listing presentations, working with buyers and the basics of life on the streets. We had class in the mornings, and in the afternoons we previewed (usually 10 properties a day) in our immediate market areas and, at our offices, sat in on stuff like floor duty and marketing training. During this period, I got my first listing - a renovated Dupont Circle mansion. It was the old Shannon & Luchs Academy of Real Estate. That was in 1983, and many of the people in my class are still highly productive Realtors.
And if they'd had blogs back then, they would have had us on ActiveRain, with training on writing posts to market ourselves and our listings, not asking stupid questions of other bloggers.
Oh, and the company reimbursed my tuition when I affiliated with Shannon & Luchs!

I was a pre-licensing Instructor for the state of Illinois..I am retired from teaching now..just SELLING homes since 1985. The cost is 595.00 for the broker's license. The majority of my students passed the first time & yes the tests are harder now & more costly. But..I always used math formulas that helped the students & advised them to read the chapters 3 times. The students remembered that way & passed 1st time.

Took the agent class course back in mid 1970s in Honolulu. The instructor was so outrageous, several people quit on the first day. But he certainly made you remember things and, of course, I passed the state test no problems. Didn't go into real estate then. Took it again in the late '80s. Instructor not memorable, but passed anyway. Then went into real estate for good in 2006, took an online course. It took 10 days to study and take the test and passed it. Took the broker's course online in 2009 in California, and the test twice, 3 months apart, and passed. Was tutored for a couple of weeks in Hawaii for its broker's course in 2013; took it twice, 1 week apart, and passed it. Their laws are very different, California is a Trustee state and Hawaii a Lien state. My take? It's a lot harder to become a broker in California and Hawaii; the tests are WAY harder than the agent ones.

This post is great! May 5 will be my 1 year licensed in MA. Course cost $100 (I had a groupon and groupon had a discount) it was 4 days (2 weekends) in April, scheduled the test for May 5 (earliest possible) test and license combined was about $300. They told us in the class that the test automatically shuts down when you reach a passing score-I finished in an hour nothing happened so I assumed I failed-NOPE passed the first time! The test does NOT shut down once you hit a passing score... I know a couple of people who took the test more than 8 times and did not pass.
The instructor also told us (about 30 in the class) that most people won't pass the first time.

I put in the hours in the real estate school, which was across the street from the real estate office that I worked part time as their front-desk secretary. This was nearly 20 years ago, before the "on line" study was available. Anyone could go in at any time to log in their hours and listen to the cassette lessons. Or, they would have "live" instructions set for three hours in the evening, but I never did that because I was a young single-mom and the flexible time worked better for me, and there was no way I could do evening live lessons. At "school" we would sign in and get the lessons which were all pre-recorded on cassette tapes. We had our own notebooks filled with print outs to go along with the lessons on the tapes. After listening to the taped lesson, you give the tape back to the front desk and get the next one. You'd leave, and let them know and that's how they counted your in-school hours. During that time, you could always go on one of the 3 computers they had in the study area and start the test which went along with the assigned lessons. The questions and answers were mutliply choice and were straight off the state licensing exam. Many people didn't even bother to listen to the taped lessons. They just sit at the computer and learn the Q&A's by rote. They'd make the motion of getting the taped lessons, but never listen to them. I did. The instructor was very good on the tapes and he explained a lot . . . more than the Q&A on the computer. I sat in the little cubicle for 140 hours total, did my assignments, took the computer tests. I forget the costs of real estate school, it was years ago. I forget the costs of the state exam, which I did not pass the first round. The second round I scored 76, and the passing grade was 75 or above. LOL.

Sales license was in June of 2009 at a large school in Louisville, KY. I sat in a classroom 8-10 hours a day, 6 days a week for 2 weeks. Passed the exam the first time I took it, with some very good scores. This class cost $595 if I remember correctly, and $100 to sit for the exam.
Broker exam was online with Todd Thornton and his RealEstateRenegade online school, which is now greatwaytolearn.com. The class was $499 and $100 to sit for the exam. I was able to forego the 48 hour Law course due to other education I had already taken, saving $499.
The Broker's License started out as a friendly competition with a GRI classmate. I finished the class (just about) during the free demo week. Then I learned I had to be in the class for 30 days, per KY law, but I was finished with the Broker class in about 2 weeks, due to the three projects it required. I passed the Broker's exam on the first try also. That is quite a story to tell as well. Darn Pearson Vue!

He told me I would know my results in about six weeks and learned I passed about a week later.
