Unfortunately, if they weren't texting, they would be eating, applying make up, shaving, reading a book (YES! I saw a driver reading a book on the interstate once), looking at a map, rocking out, changing the radio station or looking into the back seat to discipline children.
So, while texting while driving seems like an easy infraction to eliminate, there are so many reasons people are distracted while driving and the real problem is as you stated, folks don't seem to care about the damage they can cause while damage. Are they self centered, selfish, ignorant, stupid? Who knows but it's astounding how some people behave. Unfortunately, we cannot legislate any of that - and thanks to the law of unintentional consequences, whenever a legislative body attempts to correct one behavior, inevitably it doesn't work out as planned.

Once the car door closes, it could be disabled as far as I'm concerned, so the speed would not matter at that point. I would not want more government regulations, though we know that we cannot rely on people 'being smart' or 'thinking ahead' in this type of situation TeamCHI - Complete Home Inspections, Inc.

It is not just texting that is the distraction, it is emailing and talking on the phone. I read an article that says even talking on a bluetooth device can be distracting and cause accidents. I am not sure what the solution should be.

I concur with my wise friend Richie Alan Naggar on this subject..think of all the regulation police we pay for. Yikes. A

Yes, because often the person who drives and texts doesn't kill or injury themselves, they kill innocent people.

It should be disabled at any speed. But if people want to kill themselves, let them. The problem is that they often kill another unsuspecting and innocent person at the same time.

I would be awestruck at the technology that would make such a thing possible. And if so, any forward (or reverse) motion would be good. I will admit to looking at mine at a stoplight. But it is way out of hand esp with the <25 set.

I had a close call just about two weeks ago. I was able to avoid the accident, but the other driver was completely unaware. I'm not sure I'm completely for your idea, but enforcement needs to be stepped up.

No I wouldn't. I would however be in favor of larger fines and more enforcement of said fines. And now to explain myself. If "text" won't work in a moving car what if it is not the driver but a passenger getting the text? Of course there are also people like me who safely pull over to read and respond when I get a text. There is also blue tooth ability for sending texts and phones that read texts hands free.

They are cracking down on distracted driving around here.
Code of Virginia 46.2-1078.1 (http://law.lis.virginia.gov/…/title46.2/chapter10/section4…/) makes it illegal for Virginia drivers to use handheld personal communications devices while operating a vehicle.
" over 3000 deaths in 2014 due to distracted drivers "
This link, Faces of Distracted Driving, gives powerful, real stories about those whose lives have been impacted by distracted driving accidents:

No more regulations! In Austin you will get a $500 fine if texting..I'm sure we will begin to see less texting now that our grace period if over and they are enforcing the new legislation!!

I would be in favor of that.... I see people texting while driving everyday.... I lean on my horn and it makes me enraged.... once the car is in Drive, let the feature be disabled....text while in Park....
1,506,923
Set this up, and it will be disabled by people in no time. You can't disable the driver's phone and not the passengers under this idea. If you had some way of saying "I'm a passenger" then everyone would say that, defeating the purpose.
Natural selection/Darwinism will take care of this problem eventually.

I certainly would like that on my kids' phones and on many others' as well, but don't see how that can happen. I see people texting on the highways at high speeds all the time. I like Noah Seidenberg 's answer - while the car is in motion.
3,350,589
I'd be in favor of having he entire device not work as long as the car is moving. People are causing deaths just by talking on the phone because they are not paying attention to the road.
921,504
Of course not. Most often I am a passenger and Sasquatch is driving.
The problem is distracted driving, not text messaging. Soon texting will be completely replace by voice to text. That will still be distracted driving.
Dashboard display will soon be pushing advertising, alerts, directions and maybe Siri virtual have a conversation with you...again distracted driving.
Like always, the gvmt is too late to the party.

There a re pros and cons to this idea. A comparable accident rate has been reported for people engaged in conversation with passengers or on the phone while driving. Texting is an obvious problem but there are others and hard to say where we should apply legislation in lieu of what should be common sense.
1,625,253
I do not mind, but in that case all cars are going to drive slower that might create even more traffic in Los Angles and therefore more road rage.
4,484,706

No, there are so many laws now that people don't follow. It's common sense not to text and drive. Email, phone conversations surfing music apps. Daily I see these post. Last week our community lost a mother/daughter due to an auto accident. More goverment regulation is not the answer. You said it "Stupid People"

Waze is a local roadmap service. It will disable and ask are you a passenger or driver. You ans passenger and go on texing and driving....

I think it is a good idea although my bluetooth will read a text to me.
