Luckily I would in a market that is all about the ocean views so we have a lot of glass walls. Art is art but no porno art in my listings! I have never seen weapons on the walls except for a samari sword which was cool. I had a listing of one of a famous rocker once and there was a huge portrait of him and I asked to have it removed because it was a big distraction.

Good morning Jeff. I read about this topic all the time, most know if they need to de-clutter, all the items you mention could be part of the mission.

That is more than one question, Jeff (LOL)!
Depending on the art work ... maybe.
All the rest of it ... take it down.

Jeff,
My expert stager Kim Gaston coordinates with our sellers what to leave on the walls and take down. It is a case by case discussion.

In addition to those you mentioned, I would also include any artwork that involves velvet should be removed.

No Family pictures, no posters, no team flags, no deer heads, no confererate flags. ( I did once have a listing that had a confederate flag on their bedroom wall.)

Anything that makes a home for sale too personal and tell too much about the homeowners should be removed.

Jeff Dowler CRS - religious picutes are a big 'NO-NO' for sure.
Nude - it depends.....
Family pictures - avoid at all cost.
Weapons - again, a big 'NO'.
Less is better is what I can say.

I don't want sterile looking for sure. But I do recommend taking down nudes and if they have family overkill

I prefer as little as possible. If they are living in the home I understand a few extra items. I have a listing right now that the homeowners have not gotten all their collectibles removed. Some prospects love it and others can't imagine their stuff in there. It's a challenge. Artwork & paintings are viewed different from each person. Weapons? No. Religious? Prefer not. Nude paintings should be removed. Family photos very minimal.

Cut down on pictures, weapons are right out, nudes are for your eyes only, religion in moderation.

Clean and lean and less is more. I would rather see blank walls than items that could distract or offend.

I think a few family photos are okay - weapons no, nudes no - no stuffed heads, no jewelry left out, minimal religous artwork - declutter is the key

Artwork if it enhances the space. Religious artifacts, paintings of nudes, and family photos can be distracting to a buyer. I would pack them up.

Family pictures distract a buyer. I recommend valuables be out of sight. The weapons are probably valuable. Some things depend on your area. In California nudes would be more acceptable. I am in the Bible belt. When people call it the bible belt, they mean it. No nudes here.

When it comes to "staging" the home, whether on the walls, shelves, refrigerator or above the kitchen cabinets I suggest removing ANYTHING that is a distraction. Paintings of nudes and animal heads are included!

Jeff - I would say not to family photos, nude paintings, religious artifacts, and weapons. Artwork, most should be okay.

Jeff, I kindly suggest to David Gibson's sellers to get an early start on packing. Artwork needs to be the right scale for the room and usually its too small. Hire a stager for an 1-2 hr. consultation to help your seller with the best furniture placement, creative room problem solving, and to diplomatically deliver news you'd prefer not to address with your coveted listing. We're expertly trained to wear the "bad" guy hat.

I really need to de clutter my office. It's time for a cleaning out. Maybe I will save that for the next snowy weekend.

I think that most will agree that all of that stuff should be put away until after the sale.

Safety and security are my big issues. I have found that homes that have the nonrmal stuff on the walls do NOT distract my clients and usually makes they feel like we are looking a a home and not just a house

I always provide a consulation for my sellers with a stager to cover all these items..I also send my sellers links to Kathy Streib 's post who provides no-nonsese, sensible advice P.S. she hates the word de-clutter

We showed a condo last week with a photo of the 88 year old owner when she was in ther 30's...it was a NUDE self-portrait and she pointed it out to our buyers...

I would say it all has to go. I have some pictures i just took for a new blog with a wall of martial arts swords, stars etc that the buyers kid loved. and yes shooting stars do stick in walls when thrown...

On your list I would say take down the pictures of nudes, weapons, art work - depends on what it is. I would suggest having as little on the walls as possible. Sometimes family photos can take up an entire wall, and sometimes they are tastefully done with just a small area. If you have all of the pictures of your kids growing up down a long hallway, I would suggest taking all of it down and leaving the hallway bare. Basically less is more when thinking of de-cluttering.

Unless it's good artwork and properly hung, most everything else is distracting to a buyer. Less is more I always say. And I find that buyers like homes with a minimum of nail holes from where stuff was hanging.

Everything in extreme moderation. It also depends on the home and its location. I have a listing that has wonderful hunting land. There are a few animals on the wall. I wouldn't recommend that for a house in the city, though it is fairly common around my location.

All personal things get packed up including photos and collectables. Besides, they are moving, they have to pack up anyway!

LOL no nudes or even family photos Jeff. I think it is best to keep a generic look.

Family Photos - Out
Art Work - OK
Paintings of Nudes - Out
Religious artifacts - Out
