Van Buren, technically. His predecessors were born here -- but USA was not yet independent from Great Britain. I think this is a trick Q!

I agree with Candice A. Donofrio ! Trick question. Are you ready for this?
Van Buren if we're talking about the US before it was recognized by the rest of the world as actually independent. However, the Treaty of Paris in 1783 formally recognized the US as a a free and sovereign nation, which would make Zachary Taylor the first president born in the United States of America. Butttt the constitution, which established the government of the United States of America that we know today, wasn't ratified until 1788. This would make John Tyler the first president born in the United States which stands today. Technically.
But one could argue that Britain didn't actually recognize United States as independent until after the War of 1812. The US, in a sense, was independent only "nominally" and not actually--which would make it Grant. But that's stretching it a little too far...

For some weird reason, I believe I know this -- Martin Van Buren. Great question for when we get closer to President's Day.

Conrad, love the historical question and the good responses you have had!
Sad to say in our current culture you might have had more participants if you asked the question: What music icon is famous for singing Born in the USA ?

I thought that was a requirement that all presidents had to be born in the US.
