It's not as common in our market as the process is rather uneventful.  No lawyers and often times the sellers and buyers never meet.  I've had quite a few transactions where I have never seen the agent on "the other side".

I have missed fewer than 5 closings in my life--two because I was laid up after surgery. One because I was overseas and the closing date was changed at the last moment. The other two... my clients didn't attend either and pre-signed.

We've bought several homes here in AZ and never once have had an agent attend a "closing". In fact I don't even know if there is such a thing here in AZ. If I recall all we ever did was cut the check, sign a few docs, wait a few days, then go and pick up the keys from the title company.

We do not have settlement table closings here, but I will attend a doc signing locally if the client wishes, or if I have reason to think I will need to be there to fix something. That is extremely rare on both counts.

In CA a "closing" is the buyer & a notary only typically-with me on call for any questions. I attend the post recording of transfer of title, the next day, which is where I hand them the key to their new home and a gift (as a buyers' agent). As a listing agent, I attend nothing, but a pop-by to my sellers, with my thank you gift. Cali-closings are much different than other parts of the country. But what I do, is appropriate for the occasion at the appropriate time of the process.

Merry Christmas
