This is going wayyyyy back and I only remember one thing that was ever present-a Florida orange at the bottom.

We never did stockings,  because then we wouldn't have had any socks to wear. 

We always got fruits, candies and nuts..one year I got coal in my stocking!! Not happy with that one!!

We found the Lifesavers books in our stockings each year; until early adulthood.  We would then trade the various flavors...I was always looking to swap one of the 5 other siblings for Butterrum....

As long as I didn't see a lump of coal everything I found in my stocking was good.

Hershey chocolate kisses

A Sees chocolate Santa was the tradition, along with usually the batteries for whatever was big under the tree and then usually art supplies like colored pens & pencils. I loved to draw when I was a kid.

Always a tangerine in the toe...my Mom called them "magiv oranges" because they were so easy to peel

Walnuts which I didn't like because I had to crack them and they were in real stockings, we were poor so we got Mom's hand me downs! 

Miscellaneous small items, candies, key chains, super pencils..etc..wow..I had to think about that..memory lane. Happy Holidays, Michael! Is your stocking ready too?

I stock my kids stockings every year and I usually adjust them to their age and tastes, so it is usually different staff....

I always got lotions and fun jewelry.... now I give scratch tickets.... I'm having 10 on christmas eve and that's how we finish unwrapping presents.... everyone gets scratch tickets in stockings....my contribution to the State!!!!

First, the tradition was on Christmas Eve and there was likely a combination of thing -- fruit and other small items as I recall.   

Michael J. Perry We never put stockings out on Christmas. We would put them out on St. Nicholas Day on December 6th. We always got some fruit, candy and a little toy. This was our tradition.

Oranges

Actually, we have an annual tradition started almost 20 years ago when my grandmother passed. A single stocking with her picture, and a note in Italian that translates to 'don't forget me'. My parents, inlaws and a sibling's photos are now also attached to the stocking, and it hangs on the tree so they can be with us. <3 We put flowers in the stocking.

We were poor and didn't have stockings. It was hard enough on the parents to pull off getting 3 presents for each of the 5 kids.

With eleven of us in the house we had none. There was the community section under the tree with citrus and candy of the season and the infamous fruit cake!

We had no stockings in my home when I was growing up. Our tradition was to wrap "stocking stuffer-type" gifts beautifully and put them under the tree. And we opened all of our gifts on Christmas Eve.

Stocking stuffers for my family are usually the "fun" gifts and not the more expensive ones, i.e. their favorite candy/protein bars, travel toiletries, gift cards etc...

I grew up in India and we celebrated Diwali. I did not have a stocking.
