There are so many things.  One item I was oblivious to when first starting was education and training.  I now still stand on a soap box preaching the importance of training, mentoring, education.  What ever word you choose to use.  Mark

If you are new to the business, I would certainly look for a firm that provides first class training for new agents at little or no cost, and/or a mentoring program.

How about maturity?

You know what I mean, photo evidence one is dealing with an emancipated individual. (That is one pretty baby!)

After that, I can share there is only ONE thing you need to know when choosing a broker, providing YOU have done your homework like ANY small business owner would be required to do.

Your challenge will be do you want someone to hold your hand or someone to show you where the money is buried and gives you the shovel? The choice you make will prove important.

I think finding a broker who is there for you to help answer your questions or to help point you in the right diretion when you need guidance in a particualr situation.  Having a broker like that has been very beneficial for me!

Tony - Lots of things to consider. Look for a broker that is honest, available any time to answer your questions, and will help you develop your skills. Also, Sybil brings up a great point. You don't want a broker that is competing with you for business. One final point, make sure you understand the commission structure you are getting into.

I don't like to work for a broker who competes with me for listings.  I have a wonderful broker manager.  He is always there to help but he is not a micro-manager

First of all, I am an independent contractor. I work for myself and lead others who want to be coached.  Not looking for a broker or looking for his support or leads.  After a transaction I pick up my cheque and hand him his portion and he thanks me.

As Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint states, education and training are important.  I would also add that having a broker that you like and can work well with is important.  One that is on the front lines leading their staff, not sitting back and directing or managing their staff through endless reports.  I've had bosses like that.  Horrible.  You want a broker who talks to you with respect and as a human, not as some kid who doesn't know anything (I've seen large company CIOs talk that way to Senior Directors, I felt sorry for them).

If you are starting out, some of the important aspects are how much training the firm is willing to offer and how much that will cost you. Later, other issues come up such as level of support, which may be critical, but also depends on how much independence you prefer.

One big consideration - where are you in your career?  If you are a newbie, then training is important.  If you are experienced, then you might be looking for the services you broker provides and what (if anything) they charge the agents to use these services.
