Yes I've seen some wild stuff.  We get homes painted neutral before going live with a listing.

Yes it does, because to this day it amazes me how often I hear "I could never live with that color", like it has to stay or something.

That is why "listening" is so important, so will hear those comments, and can then rebuttal them.

Wild paint colors may be a turn off of some prospects. Painting in acceptable colors is part of the preparation before listing a home for sale.

Yes it does affect a sale. Anyone thinking of selling their home should paint in neutral colors.

Winston, depends on the situation, but generally yes, it pays to tone it down!

If I'm dealing with a Seller who, for whatever reason, is unable to repaint is it wrong to expect a Buyer's Agent to talk their Buyer through such a simple problem?   Perhaps even write in that the home will be "neutralized" prior to closing?  I'm so sick of Buyers acting like prima donas with zero vision.  Paint the picture a different colour in their minds.   Teach them how to put their own personalized stamp on the property.

As a Realtor, I'm soooo sick of these boring neutral homes, all done in the same dull tones and my Buyers are too.   One just said to me this weekend, was there a sale on these paint colours in this area - every house looks the same!

It can.  First impressions matter.  Why not make it be memorable - for the right reason?

those who are thinking of selling need to be mindful of the phrase "tastefully decorated"....wild is wonderful if it's for YOU....but it's not for everyone.

Looking For Homes With A Smile

Hello Winston.  Yes, colors affect offers plus and minus.  So many home shoppers cannot see past them-- they cannot visualize the potential or even appeal.  Dark colors make rooms look smaller, less inviting, and fail to bring out the sparkle.  It is not easy to differentiate dirt from shadows where the lighting is handicapped by dark colors.  Some colors are worse than others.

Personally, I like lite and bright.  A house needs to smile and invite.  Twenty dollars for paint is a bargain when a room looks like a dungeon.

My reaction is $3 sq foot rounded up to the nearest thousand.

Repainting actually costs half that amount.

No, everyone wants their own wild colors. Bright colors should be removed immediately. Yet, I noticed  a huge popularity of bright gray:)

My feeling after reading the responses tonight is based on price and demand first. Condition and colors second. Though first impressions are important, are they as important as the overall price point? Today it seems all about the buck.

Definitely!  Wild colors are very personal and don't appeal to most buyers and many can't look past that.

I have seen some unique color choices, a lot of buyers know paint is easy to fix, but some can't get past it. If I take the listing and it is just to unique, I let them know it may be easier to sell if the seller invests in some painting.

I think a single person must live there, because two people wouldn't agree on such a color!
