I think of a cabin as being built out of logs or timber, and a cottage being a small brick or siding house.

My impression is one gets more $ calling it a cottage.

Cabin is rustic in the woods or by a lake with basic amenities, and cottage has an emotional value as cute, fully functioning, just smaller.  Hope that helps. A

A cabin is made with logs as in lincoln logs.  A cottage is a small house.

Cottage to me is quaint and has a little New England look. A cabin is more rustic and basic and may have a wooden exterior like logs or rough wood.

I agree with Patricia Kennedy.  I think you also have to take into consideration where the property is.  I would think of a cabin in the woods, and a cottage at the beach.

Cabins are generally built from wood and have an unfinished appearance inside. 

Cottage can be built from wood, stone, brick, etc... However, the interior of the cottage if finished and usually painted and looks like a typical home. 

To me a cottage is on the water and only for summer use; a cabin may be on the water generally having a fire place and used year round.

Cabin may come with taxidermy.
