If I have their email address I don't send direct mail

totally depends upon what it is I mailed.  I'm about to mail out " did you get your tax bill post cards?" and if I don't hear from everyone on the list in two weeks I'll follow up with a call.   But I also mail them a Christmas card, no follow up for that.

When I do mail past clients I follow Jack Barry suggestion, the direct mail should suggest what will happen next.

However, what I find works remarkably is adhering the EBM principles, which will clearly align with their observation. Basing the follow up on the 'rest of the story' creates an anticipation, or even compel them to call you.

Three days is the wait time I use. (Note: I include my address in the mailing so that I KNOW when they received the letter and/or if the USPS militated important information)

Hi Erin:

Our past client emails look something like this "...and we will be calling next week to see if you have any questions or need any of our resources."  We prepare them for the call.
