That Daniel is an age old question. It reminds me of a couple of rules of thumb i have remembered, related or not you decide.
1) when i thought during my life, how my children fell into priorities, i used to ask myself , if not for my wife, i wouldn't have kids. I always put her first (kind of what the bible says :) )
2) happiness never was derived from stuff. I have had stuff in my life, and i went without stuff. stuff made me smile at times but never warmed me like my family.
3) above all (except paying homage to the almighty) i have to look in the mirror. and in a man's life, at least it used to be, keeping his word , and doing the best for your customers gives us a feeling that no other can do. finding the balance of doing the JOB , and the pride that it gives us and balancing our family life. is tough. but 300 years ago, the family wouldn't eat if we didn't do our job. literally they could die. While that is no longer the reality of life. It is in our DNA. So that my friend is the struggle, and it said well below, THAT MUST come from within. good luck...sorry to go on. but that is a VERY impostant question.
