I don't cross the line. I email or call a "lead" once.  If they are interested, they will let me know.   If I have to "pester" a potential client, then they are not really ready to buy or sell.  I spend the time I have, with the clients who are ready.  I have found the best leads are the ones that call me or email me directly to begin with.

I would not do that.......ever. I'd patiently try to call/text/email them till I get through. If you already have 'an established client'', make it work.

It may be that something urgent or game changing has arisen and so listing their home is not temporarily or permanently on their list of high priorities.

I'm not sure what you mean by crossing the line.  If they aren't returning your calls or emails, I'm not sure what you can do.

Ask yourself what one thing, as the homeowner, you do NOT want to happen.

Let them know that IS about to happen and they WILL cal you.

Done correctly, there is no line to cross.

I never "cross the line". I might send a thank you card or some sort of document regarding current real estate information and stay in touch that way.
There could be a number of reasons for no return call. Maybe it's time to say "next".

Something unexpected may have happened (death in family, loss of job, etc) that may be delaying their response.  You have done your part.  Sit and wait.  If it is meant to be, it will boomerang back.  Good luck!
