When you shop the job, be sure to ask them how they remove the product. I have done it dry and wet and the wet is the better method; a lot less dust. Last job I had done was $1.50.SF, including disposal.

I sold a property and learned something about these ceilings. Some of the older popcorn ceilings have asbestos in them and should not be a DIY project.

I agree that only wet method should be used. This very short video (1.39) is the neatest way I've seen so far ( after you received results from a lab that there is no asbestos!):

Hi Inna -- it can vary.  When I did on my own home --- prior to taking occupancy(it's the only way to do it in my opinion) it was around $1.50 per square foot(about ten years ago).  It included removal of the ceiling, preparing the celing, painting and proper disposal.   Testing was addressed separately and was relatively inexpensive($50 or so as I recall).

I've had clients receive quotes ranging from seemingly too cheap to outrageously expensive.   The company who did it for me is no longer in business.

Most homeowners will do this project (removal) on their own in my area of florida. From prep to clear out a full day (12 hours) is needed for 1,000 square feet of ceiling.....then five days to heal the aching back.

When the last area of ceiling paint has dried, the owner knows they have acccomplished something outstanding.

Good morning Inna. There is no simple way, lots of scraping and it makes a mess. Almost impossible to repair, but have done it, but only in very small areas and then the entire ceiling needs to be repaired.

Make it a great weekend!

It's an expensive big job; don't have real numbers, but I do know that buyers can walk away from a home with a popcorn ceiling.
