I see the advantages of being with a "big name" company, but I prefer an independent brokerage. I've done both and have spent the last 4 years with a small company, and I really like it. Maybe that's only because of the people, but I'm the youngest agent in my office, and the experience here blows me away. If we can't get a transaction closed...no one can. The owner has had his license for over 35 years. We are also here to help each other and cover each other.

Cheryl Johnson , I prefer to be with an independent brokerage that lets me do my own thing. Though, for some, the big name is their preference. I would think it depends on the cmfort level and the way each person wants to work.

Debbie Laity That is similar to our set up: I have been licensed since 1983. The 6 other agents here are all experienced veterans.
But I would like to move into a new phrase this coming year, and add some new young blood.
I am looking to line up my "talking points" so when the conversation with a potential recruit moves to why go with me instead of a bigname, I'll have some answers.
I love the quote "if we can't get a transaction closed, no one can"!!!

Personally I prefer a smaller Brokerage. I've been with 3 "big name" Brokers in my career & I can honestly say that not only am I happier now, but I've learned much more.
In my experience with the bigger firms it was mostly about the numbers & production; whereas the smaller firm tends to be more personal & genuine in their concern about my personal goals & growth as an Agent.
Whether an Agent goes with a bigger firm or smaller firm depends on where they are in their personal career journey & the vision they have for their career.
With me- starting out- a branded firm was the only option in my mind because I didn't know anyone & was new to the area. As time went on- my vision for my career remained the same, but the way I choose to get there has changed... so I made the switch.

I had independent offices for many years. If I were making the decision today, RE/MAX would be my first consideration. Much depends on the size of the market. A local name may work quite well in some markets but the big brand names have a definite advantage in large markets.

I was a big fish in a small company for 30 years, now I am enjoying so many more benefits as a medium fish in a huge company, and so are the members of my team.

Now we are all 'self-employed' and work with who we are comfortable with.

I tried few big boxes, ended up with a small brokerage and plan to become a broker by myself soon. But right now I really prefer being with a small company.

I think the area might help the decision. In our small town we are tied to one out of every four sales. Large names only help those folks who grew up with them. Local can have its advantages.
