The goal when we first released Q&A (2-3 years ago) was to generate leads for our members. Unfortunately, what we saw instead were requests for free legal advice, foreign investment schemes, and other garbage.  Most of the questions we were getting weren't helping the community at large.

The new direction is to give people to the chance to learn from their peers.  Only logged in members are allowed to ask/answer questions.

The most valuable part of ActiveRain is the collaborative knowledge we share as a community.

I have to say that I prefer a forum like this that is closed to the members to all the forums on other social sites that put everything out there in the public eye.  Too many of those discussions go bad because someone gets on there and starts attacking others on the forum.  The "My ego is so big that I know more than you do types" or the internet trolls who just like to cause trouble.  I think this is a fantastic idea.  Go Activerain!

Sounds like a good reason to change, and I think this will be a good thing.

I like having a section where we can ask questions of each other. Maybe have two Q and A sections. One for public and one for private.

I like this idea. I agree we were not getting much from the old Q and A feature.

I wonder if this will supplement or replace the other Q&A?

I wouldn't anticipate "leads" from an agent to agent Q&A outside of possibly getting an occaisional referral from someone that might just happen to take the time to read a details response instead of just skipping over the "thanks for the insightful blog post, I appreciate your insight" (BTW, did I get 25 points? - LOL)

I am with you Bob, is this to get more interaction from the community on subjects other than listings and localisms?

Bob, indeed this was getting member only Q&A - so it's fine, correct?
