The variable constant of my life is being a community volunteer.  I love and learn and grow as an involved participant. Over my adult life I reflect on the things that matter most:  church, town and my industry involvement.  I immerse myself in a certain activity and cease at that and move on to a new love.  Sometimes these variable activities overlap and I become overwhelmed but when that happens I eventually 'shed' a volunteerism and expand to a new theater of interest.  I began my volunteer socializing in small (but good) church choir.  As a builder I expanded to become the church house committee chairman and eventually as a member of the board of trustees.  My community called and I answered by joining the zoning board of appeals and followed that stint as a planning board member and capped by associations with a half dozen other committees, the most rewarding of which was the elementary school building committee.  It was an honor to serve in these various capsities and I served vigorously until 2008 when heart surgery slowed me down.  But, of all volunteer activities of my life it has always been the work related that truly 'grabbed' me.  Many involved the home builders association.  I joined 'The Growth is Good Committee' and began to think of political changes in the context of 'why not'.  To me zoning was often an impediment to intelligent land use.  'Cluster' by right as opposed to the conventional special permit format was passed in MA and followed by model bylaws called OSRD (open space residential design).  To celebrate my brother and I built a 45 lot one in Georgetown.  Other wonderful moments were the creation of the Massachusetts Builders Land Trust -- what could seem as unlikely as a land trust crated and maintained by home builders.  I terminated my builder activity by rising to the office of Sr VP of the Massachusetts Homebuilders Assn.  It was an honor to serve with my colleagues, but the industry went south and our pocket books slowly turned inside out. While recuperating from open heart surgery and feeling the financial smarting of the times I perused the Internet in search for my next employment venue.  My various searches led me to more greenish things than I had been accustomed to build.  Then there was the reality that my physical condition was certain to prevent building as before -- better leave the bull work to the younger generation.  As luck would have it my son Nathan was ready to take over and we partnered with a 20-year SIP builder, Bob Higgins of Derry, NH.  We are firmly convinced that framed homes with batt insulation are vastly inferior structures.  We've taken the pledge, we only build ICF &/or SIP homes --- for cost and payback we can't imagine why you would build otherwise.
