One of the things I love most about being a Realtor is the opportunity it gives us to participate in our communities and have a positive influence in the lives of others.  With a long history of being an active volunteer, organizer and participant in the San Ramon Valley community, I was honored this past year by the Bay East Association of Realtors as their Good Neighbor Award winner.

As a co-chair for Windermere's Annual Community Service Day, it was a pleasure to return to Shepherd's Gate in Livermore for our 2nd year of service to an organization that is located right in the heart of where we live and work.  Through organizing, planning and carrying-out this all-volunteer event, as well as the months of preparation leading up to it, Windermere's Community Service Day involved over 60 of the East Bay's Realtors, inviting their spouses, children and spheres of influence to make a difference in such a central part of our community.

As a co-chair I designed marketing flyers regarding the impact we will make through our service to Shepherd's Gate and encouraged Realtors in my office to invite others so that we can share the good deed of giving back and seeing viable results in a day's work.  Publicly I spoke to Realtors about the importance of regular community service, as I have been doing for years, knowing that our day of service will leave an impact for years to come.

It was great fun to organize and manage over 400 hours of volunteer service to an organization that has served over 47,000 meals in 2008 just in Alameda and Contra Costa County alone; a haven that has provided thousands of pieces of clothing and furniture to women who were homeless, abused, or drug-addicted in a community we are directly a part of.  Through our volunteer efforts, we were directly able to help Shepherd's Gate in areas that budget cuts have restricted them.  Due to the decline in private donations this past year, Shepherd's Gate experienced their first downsizing in the facility's history.  With this, came regular job duties that became neglected, duties that are required for the upkeep and maintenance of this Livermore campus that houses 40 families of women and children who need a place to recover and grow -  this is where our service and my volunteer management was able to fill in and make a direct impact.

Collectively, we not only impacted Shepherd's Gate's Livermore campus by providing them with what they have been doing without (to include maintenance, landscaping, and facility cleanup), we instilled community service and philanthropy in the hearts and minds of over 60 Realtors who saw, met and listened to the hardship some people in their own backyards had to endure.  I concluded that day knowing that a few more Realtors were going to continue to give back on a regular basis because of the importance and impact they felt on this day, and I felt good knowing that while giving back has always been a part of my every day business, it's important to help and show other Realtors what a huge difference a single day can make.
