Why you should hire me as your Inspector  Ultimately, you have to make the decision as to which Inspector to hire among the dozens that are out there in your area.  But how do you know which one to hire?  It depends on a combination of a lot of factors, some of which are:You want an Inspector that has been trained at some of the nation's top institutes and has the knowledge to know what he/she is doing. I have.Experience certainly plays a part in your final decision.  How long has the Inspector been doing this?  Many Inspectors claim that they "have been in the construction business for over 20 years."  Does this mean that they were a carpenter for the past 20 years and decided to try Home Inspections because they thought it would be more lucrative?  How much do they know about heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical?  Some are engineers with masters degrees, but are you going to understand a word they say.  Some, like myself, come from a variety of backgrounds and have been doing inspection type work most of their lives.  Price is a factor, although most Inspectors charge about the same amount for an Inspection.  The only differences would be an Inspector that offers extra services like radon or mold testing, but these extra services usually increase the cost dramatically so you must decide if you really need these extra services.  You should consider an Inspector that offers a more thorough Home Inspection and gives you more bang for your buck.  One that will inspect the things that really matter (the ones that could wind up costing you lots of money to fix) and throws in a generous helping of common sense knowledge and real world experience. You want an Inspector that will talk to you not down to  you.  You want an Inspector that won't constantly be saying, "That's the way I always did it when I was building houses".  An Inspector that will take the time to thoroughly explain everything to you in common sense terms.  You do not want an Inspector that worked as a carpenter or plumber for 20 years.  These are the craftsmen that Inspectors discover cut corners and do shoddy work sometimes.  You do not want an engineer that will fill his report with technical jargon that you can't understand.  Engineers have a lot of book sense but sometimes lack common sense.  I had a friend that was an Electrical Engineer at NASA who called me over to his house to help him change the spark plugs in his car-he didn't know where to begin-yet he designed rocket propulsion devices!  You want an Inspector that has been around for a while, but isn't so old that he claims (over and over again) "I can't go in there" or "That's too high" or refuses to do the slightest bit of extra work to get the job done.  You don't want a young kid that just graduated from technical school, how could he possibly have enough real world experience to understand the complexities of all of a houses components?I have spent a greater portion of my life checking other people's work for errors in quality and craftsmanship.  I bring to the table over 30 years of real world experience in dealing with people and homeownership.  I have taken the extensive training to know how every system in your house should work and what to look for to determine if the work has been done right.  I can assure you, that if you are my client, I will fight for your rights and not try to sugar coat anything.  I will not be done with your Inspection until you are completely satisfied. Education and Affiliations  Management Science Instituteof Home InspectionDearborn Institute of Home InspectionCarson Dunlop Training InstituteScotts Training Institute® onLawn Care and Maintenance 2005OrkinTM Institute of pest controlMember of NACHI® National Association ofCertified Home Inspectors Member of The OhioFarm Bureau FederationMember of Angie's list
