A CULTURE SHIFT STARTS WITH ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Have you felt that you are on an uphill climb? The people in your organization or on your real estate team are stuck in a rut. You find new energetic people but they do not stay. Your organization has a culture issue. It may have evolved over time, but you are not able to take the team where you want it to go. Changing culture takes a focused effort from leadership.

Attitudes drive culture. I love what Zig Ziglar said, “Your attitude determines your altitude.” But how do you change attitude? Some people, to your dismay, find their altitude suits them just fine.

Positive attitude and positive vision are the starting points. Yes, you must be upbeat, positive about the future, and set the example. Model the right behaviors and attitudes and find other “heroes” to model it too. This starts the change in direction and attitudes, behaviors then become ingrained in the organization. The organization must have positive vision and values, and leadership must live and promote those organization core values. But if there is a negative attitude at the top the culture of the organization is doomed.

All people won’t change but they will be left behind by those who are living the change and developing the new culture. And you need to select new team members for their enthusiasm and shared values. When they join and they see enough like minded people they will be energized. This starts the ball rolling. It is your role to mentor them and keep them energized.

What will this do for your organization? You will attract employees and customers to the culture you have created. I can walk through an organization and know something about its culture. If your culture is one of collaboration and teamwork, for example, like minded people will be attracted.

I have one specific organizational example and that is the networking organization BNI that is comprised of many chapters. Some are outstanding while others are struggling. I observe visitors who attend, and they tend to gravitate to those who show enthusiasm and desire to build relationships. The ones that are struggling need paradigm shifts in their culture. They are in a rut.

Attitudes

What about you as the leader? Is your heart in your business? If it is not, you might want to consider getting out and searching for what you really desire. On the other hand, if you really love, let’s say, real estate sales you should be focusing on the rewards. You will have obstacles, but you can plan for them and anticipate them. Changing your thought patterns and your outlook is about changing attitudes. Focus on the reward of more sales rather than the problems.

Stay focused on what you want and what can go right-- in short what you can become.

The culture of your company is in your hands. Create your dream culture.  For a similar post on our website see HOW CAN I CHANGE MY ORGANIZATION'S CULTURE?

Grant I firmly believe that cultural changes and attitude have to happen naturally.  They can't be planned or forced.  The atmosphere has to be one which encourages others to want to be involved and not have to be dragged along.

Hi Grant,

You have touched on another important topic. A culture shift in a company can be done but starts at the top and must have everybody on board.  Education and attitude reinforcement are key at all levels.

Grant another great post!  And it does begin at the top I think back on my favorite boss and he truly set the culture for us...and we thrived. When I hired for my particular office...I kept that in mind. I asked a top producer to leave because of the harm she created for the rest of the office.

As others have written, cultural change begins at the top.  Also those not at the top should undertake the research to discover the culture.  One of the reasons many new real estate agents leave is the culture is not good because the leadership is not present.

Good morning Grant,

Such a truthful post on culture change. It begins at the top and our Broker in our office is a "Leader" and leads by example. Our office culture is one of sharing and nurturing which is why so many have remained there for so long and are top producers. When you work from abundance and not scarcity its amazing what can happen.

Joan - that is certainly true.  To change culture get out of the rut.

George - if forced there is no culture change just a tense environment.

Sheri - absolutely.  Some company cultures are doomed because of the leader.

Kathy - asking that person to leave was hard but the long term benefits outweighed the momentary loss.

Paul - yes I have noticed and it is no surprise.

Leanne - you are right about why they leave but try telling that to some brokers I know.

Michael - yes there is potential in change.  Book "who moved my cheese" illustrates that.

Kat - always the case for achievers.  On the other hand if the gravitate the other way they are detractors.

Dorie - I believe that.  Also lead by example and be positive with all communication.

Wanda - I have always believed that a positive attitude and positive communication is most important.

And you have to narrow your focus.  Have recently seen first hand what damage someone can do who keeps going counter to a new path.  This is someone who doesn't follow a plan, but always comes up with other plans.  Ergo, not much gets done.  Luckily, I extricated myself from getting involved early on.  And, no, their business plan has not gotten off the ground yet.

Kathy - thank you for highlighting this post.

Faye - the positive attitudes lead to positive results.

Laura -  yes I love that quote.

Hella - this is a class issue with dysfunctional companies when people are not on the same page.
