upper west side: Neighborhood Eats: Barney Greengrass The Sturgeon King - 10/05/11 10:59 AM

If you're looking for nice atmosphere, nice decorations, table cloths, candles and warm and fuzzy waiters then go next door to the Popover Cafe. But if you don't mind "ungapatchka" (a Yiddish word that describes the overly, busy and cluttered with junk)   If you're a real "foodie" and you can put up with the atmosphere, "tumult", and "shtick" from the staff than you will enjoy a real authentic Jewish breakfast at Barney Greengrass The Sturgeon King.
Barney Greengrass The Sturgeon King is an Upper West Side institution that looks like it hasn't renovated or redecorated in over 100 years since … (6 comments)

Condos and Condops with Pools on Upper West Side
While there are many apartment buildings on the Upper West Side most are pre-war coops. There are fewer condos and even fewer condops and only a select few condos and condops have swimming pools. Many new large construction developments are including pools, so there are more pools in luxury condos and condops than ever before.
According to a recent Corcoran.com Consumer survey 37%, the largest margin said a building with a pool is a top priority amenity for them.

upper west side: Best Deal On The Upper West Side - 09/27/11 07:47 AM

Gray's Papaya an Upper West Side Institution raised prices again this summer!

How can we hate you?
The "Recession Special" still returns change from $5 bill, 2 Franks and a drink for $4.50
Since I've been living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan Gray's Papaya has raised their prices a few times. About ten years ago or so, one hot dog cost only 75 cents. Then it skyrocketed to $1.25 in 2005 (during the bubble) prices remained stable for a while then inching up to $1.50 about three years ago. What will the future be like for Hot Dogs?

upper west side: Verdi Square- Upper West Side Condo Apartments - 09/25/11 02:29 PM
Verdi Square Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue between West 73rd Street and West 73nd Street on the Upper West Side.
Verdi Square is a small triangular shaped piece of land with the Giuseppe Verdi statue (opera singer) enclosed by fencing on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
In the early 1900s the square served as a gathering place for musicians, including Enrico Caruso, Arturo Toscanini and Igor Strativinsky.

In 1974, Verdi Square was designated a Scenic Landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, one of only nine public parks to receive this distinction.

upper west side: 1920 Vintage Subway Ride in Manhattan - 09/24/11 03:47 PM

HBO folks dressed in prohibition era fashion are giving out free metro-cards at the 72nd Street subway station on the Upper West Side to promote season two of Martin Scorcese's Boardwalk Empire.

An authentic vintage 1920’s train has been running on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan throughout September (specifically, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays). I got to take the ride today.

Originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, the train began service in 1917 and is once again operational.

The vintage train has been transporting New Yorker's and visitors back … (11 comments)

50 West 86th Street - Limeston Mansion - Townhouse
A recent New York Times article is about the house next door to Carrie Bradshaw's 'sex and the city' townhouse, 64 Perry Street recently listed for sale in the West Village although in the TV series Carrie Bradshaw lived in a fictitious Upper East Side townhouse.
This blog is about the townhouse that both the real Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker, and I both lived in during the 1980s on the Upper West Side off Central Park West.
My first Manhattan apartment was a studio with a sleeping loft complete with brick wall and huge … (17 comments)

upper west side: Cool & Kosher on the Upper West Side - 09/05/11 01:44 PM
A few nights ago I was having dinner with a friend from California at one of my favorite local restaurants. We were sitting by the window and my friend commented about the ultra luxury cars pulling up and parking. He noticed how well dressed the people were and he noticed the men were wearing yarmulkes.
I don't pay much attention to cars anymore and living on the Upper West Side for several decades, seeing men wearing yarmulkes on UWS of Manhattan is as common as seeing men wearing cowboy boots in Dallas.
I told my friend they were going to Prime … (5 comments)

B'nai Jeshurun - 257 West 88th Street on the Upper West Side is the second oldest synogogue in Manhattan
While hundreds of people have been waiting to get married this morning at the Marriage Bureau on Worth Street, B'nai Jeshurun was at the forefront of the fight to make this a reality. Five years ago, congregants formed a Marriage Equality Hevra, a term meaning "community," to join the campaign for the passage of gay marriage as part of the synagogue's social justice initiative.

The synagogue has been administering same sex commitment ceremonies since 1991 but today New York State … (6 comments)
