morningside heights: Harlem Neighborhood Market Report - 10/01/11 08:37 AM
Harlem was established in 1658 by the Dutch and named Nieuw Harlem after the Dutch city of Harlem. This large section of Manhattan real estate has a deep spirit, culture and history.
Apartment buyers can explore new buildings that range in size and style from studios to three-bedroom condos, co-ops to luxury lofts, along with renovated historic brownstones and townhouses.
Developers have converted brownstone, shells of buildings and narrow vacant lots into condominium apartments. For Harlem home buyers, this wave of condo conversion in Harlem provides an opportunity to live in a neighborhood with small-scale buildings. Harlem zoning does not allow … (8 comments)

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal Monday from neighborhood businesses paving the way for Columbia University to expand it's campus into the Manhattanville section of West Harlem.
Owners filed a lawsuit challenging the Empire State Development Corporation's plan to use eminent domain to force them out so the university could expand.
The 17-acre site, in the Manhattanville section of West Harlem, is less than a mile from Columbia’s main campus in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood. It will add more than 6.8 million square feet to the university, including a new business school and science facilities.
The plan was … (22 comments)

morningside heights: Why They Call it Morningside - 07/15/10 04:01 AM
I just read a post by one of my favorite bloggers Why they call it Rock Creek by Patricia Kennedy, Washington D.C.'s quintessential REALTOR®. Earlier in the day I learned why they call it Morningside Park and Morningside Heights.
What's in a name?
The area that is now Morningside park was described as "inconvenient for use" by a city surveyor in 1867, meaning difficult to build property on, so it was made into a park, which was called "Morning-side park" because its east facing slope catches the morning sun. The neighborhood that developed around the park became Morningside Heights.

morningside heights: NY State Approves Columbia University Expansion: Eminent Domain - 07/18/08 01:54 PM

Rendering of Columbia campus at 131st Street & Broadway
Empire State Development Corporation has adopted the Columbia University General Project Plan and authorized a public hearing for the university's proposed West Harlem expansion. The state agency declared the 17-acre expansion footprint as blighted, a necessary step before using eminent domain. Two reports characterized the area by aging, poorly maintained and functionally obsolete industrial buildings, with little indication of recent reinvestment to revive their generally deteriorated conditions. The $6.28 billion project, which is to be funded entirely by the university, will add up to 6.8 million square feet of new, state-of-the-art facilities in … (2 comments)

morningside heights: Columbia University, NYU; Apartment Buildings - Real Estate Empires - 08/27/07 04:53 AM
Summer is almost over as evidenced yesterday by the crowds of NYU students in Greenwich Village. With a little help from their parents they moved into dorms and apartments in Greenwich Village.  Yesterday was NYU "Move -in Day."
A similar scenario takes place in Morningside Heights as Columbia University students begin moving in to their dorms and luxury apartments that Columbia owns.
Both NYU and Columbia have been building real estate empires in their respective Manhattan neighborhoods. Both private non profit institutions have real estate holdings worth more than half a billion dollars. Columbia ownes more than 7,000 apartments and it's real … (10 comments)

morningside heights: Manhattan Avenue Historic District Created - 06/28/07 08:51 AM

The Landmarks Preservation Commission recently created a new historic district in Morningside Heights on the Upper West Side.
The newly created historic district is comprised of 40 buildings on Manhattan Avenue between 104th and 106th Streets. Unlike many of Manhattan's earlier row houses, which were primarily built with brownstone facades in the classical style, the structures in the new Manhattan Avenue district combine Gothic, Queen Anne and Romanesque features.
Originally called "New" Avenue when it was created in 1868, Manhattan Avenue starts at 100th Street and continues to 125th street where it merges with St. Nicholas Avenue.
Manhattan Avenue irregularly … (5 comments)
