The population of LaGrange County is 36,875, with the county seat being in LaGrange. The cornerstone of the present courthouse was laid on August 15, 1878 and has now been placed on the rolls of the "National Registry of Historic Places", as of July 17, 1980. LaGrange County has 2 golf courses, 64 lakes, wildlife preserves and recreation grounds.
Howe, sits on the northern edge of the county about three miles south of the Michigan state line, near the I-80/90 Toll Road and is home to Howe Military School which was founded in 1884. The school is a co-educational military institute & private college prepartory boarding school for students in grades 5 through 12. Cedar Lake Golf Course and the area lakes provide activities all year round, as well as the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife is southeast of Howe.
LaGrange, Parkview LaGrange Hospital is constructing a new facility expected to be completed Spring of 2008. The Lakeland School Corp, has its administrative offices located in LaGrange, Town Park and the LaGrange County 4-H Fairgrounds, as well as the Maple Wood Nature Center.
Shipshewana: Shipshewana has a strong religious history, with the first settlement of Amish coming to the area from Pennsylvania in 1844. Shipshewana is packed with visitors every Tuesday and Wednesday from May through October as visitors come for the famous Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market. More than 1,000 vendors set up booths to market their product. Shipsheweana is also home to scores of unique emporiums specializing in folk art, hand-made Amish quilts, furniture, homemade jellies and jams. The Shipshewana business district is a shopper's dream. Located in the town are antique shops, toy stores, unique gift shops, bakeries to name a few. A new Shipshewana Town Center, will house a visitors center, car museum, a hotel and water park. There are several hotels for you over night stay.
Topeka: The Topeka Livestock Auction located east of downtown Topeka, attract thousands of people annually that are seeking to purchase horses, carriages and exotic animals, every Tuesday. Topeka houses major companies with great industry for area work. The administrative offices of Westview School are located in Emma, just north of Topeka.
Wolcottville: is a small town with a chain of lakes that lies in both Noble and LaGrange counties, sits on the southern border of LaGrange County. Wolcottville is the central business and shoppin location for many year-round and summer residents on the Indian Lakes chain and other rural residents. There are sking and no sking lakes in the area that brings great recreation to the area.
