The moment I woke up this morning - before I even hit the snooze button - I was inspired to blog.  I thought about how important my alarm clock is and how little the investment to purchase it was.  (It also reminded me of a recent post by smart & charming Chris Elizabeth Griffith (but alas it is on my nightstand not my desk!).

My alarm clock - which I've never consciously valued before and many times have despised altogether - cost a total of ~$8.00.  My previous alarm clock cost roughly the same. Between the two I've spent about $16.00 over the course of 12 years.  Without it I'd never make it out of bed.  That makes it pretty valuable whether I recognize it or not.

I have a love-hate relationship with my cell phone, but I've always valued it.  As a real estate professional it's my life-line, right?  It's the way I lead generate, schedule appointments, communicate with friends and family, etc., etc.  In comparison to my alarm clock, I've spent ~$1100.00 on cell phones in the past 12 months!  Why?  Repairing - that's what I get for buying a refurbished phone, upgrading - from a Treo 650 to a 680, replacing - 680s don't like to be dropped down stairs I suppose.  I guess I'm a little to hard on them....

So when I think about my ROI (return on investment) I guess I should really appreciate my alarm clock.  After all, without it I'd still be in bed rather than learning, sharing, and networking here on AR!

I'll put the 650 in a comment once I collect it's parts  :)

The 680 that took a tumble.  Looks fine, but I assure you it isn't...

The newest 680 (angels singing in the background...  Alleluia!)

It is funny, how we treat things.  The love-hate relationship with the cell phone makes the laugh.  Although I pretty much feel the same way, I didn't know what a love-hate relationship was until I started getting into music performance.  I was a clarinet player, and there were times where I wanted nothing more than to never see a clarinet again, and then there were other times where I would have been perfectly happy replacing the cat next to me in bed with the clarinet.  At least the clarinet didn't hog the covers, right????

My alarm clock, like yours, was a great buy.  I bought it the summer before seventh grade, which is 11 years ago now.  I don't notice it so much when I'm home, or dispise it for going off just when I started to sleep good, but if I stay overnight in a hotel, man I'm missing that stupid alarm clock.  The "wake up" feature, where it doesn't clare, scare me, and result in me throwing it across the room and being crabby all day... the fading neon green light... the perfect 9 minute snooze, and the nap feature... what more can you ask for???

Here's to all the great alarm clocks in the world.  I agree - without mine, I'd still be sleeping, too!

My husband was CERTAIN that our alarm clock was wacky and gaining time.  I didn't pay attention because at 103, sleep patterns have me up before the gong or when it goes off and I don't care what the numbers say.

But, to indulge him, we bought a new clock.  Under $10.  He opted for the one with BIG RED DIGITAL numbers.  And, thank god a swivel top.  Since I am the early riser, I am the first to hit snooze.  I am also the most likely to remember to set the alarm. But, I have to swivel it away from my face in the night because of the RED glare....no need for a nightlight.  And some nights I still drape a tissue over it's annoying bright face.     With the clock facing the wall now, does anybody know what time it is?

Joslyn  Ahh, the perfect 9 minute snooze....

JudyAnn  Oh, that red glare...  I know it too well.

Here's the 650.  Look how sad.  You can't even see all of the scratches and nicks.  Those black "smudges" are actually on the screen - the consequence of the last time I dropped it.  And the last straw forcing me to get a new one.

Yes, I started giving away it's parts....  No more battery cover.  No more stylus.

Well, old reliable acquired a hum so I replaced it.  The Sony "Dream Machine" is a radio as well as alarm clock.  The best feature?  It has an internal battery and when the power goes out it continues to work and keeps the time.  It even had the correct time when I plugged it in for the first time!
