I think in real estate you need to be constantly re-inventing yourself to stay ahead of the curve. In the past I've always had a bit of a chuckle when the new guys started in the office and from the first day they sat their with their laptops tapping away - Almost without fail these were the guys that failed because they were living in fantasy land, they did not work the phone, they did not bang down the doors and pound the streets. These were the things that I was doing and it was making me money. It's a different story today, beware of the guy carrying the laptop because often he understands database client management, autoresponders & drip feed email. His clients love the way they get a personal email from him each week as he has mastered push technology. This guy knows web marketing inside out and has his own face popping up in the organic and paid search results every single day, he is getting sales and listings from the web in volumes that could not be dreamed about only a few years ago. Our guy has a handful of PA's running around keeping his clients happy running his open days and advertising. Even when times get tough our guy has the profile and leverage using technology that allows him to prosper. Almost every week I meet agents who don't use resources available to them and I wonder why - is it fear or are they stuck in a rut? Real Estate Forum

Sharon - you are soooo right.  I think that there must be a course in college that convinces people that oncd they get a job, they'll just automatically be paid for attendance!

Keep up the great work.

Sharon,

No kidding! I got into real estate in 1999 after spending 20 years repairing cars. I was one of the early guys with a laptop and  web marketing in my office. The old timers looked at me like I was crazy. But I did go out and knock doors and meet people and had fun!

Real Estate.. isn't it great!

Cheers,

That phone number almost stops people from calling!

Yes I love email. It is the best and the easiest way to get ahold of clients

all the tech stuff is a great way to meet clients.  There are several agents I know that still only check e-mail a couple of times a week.  it is a new way and that doesn't work anymore.

Techies are gonna be the money makers of the future!

Hey Sharon, I'm going to check out your site.  I'm not techie per se, but I'm creative in my angles searching for the next deal, leave no stone unturned.

Sharon,

Yep, the difference between old-school jurassic practice and today. It's not separated by age, but by tech proficiency. We've got a few very successful jurassic types in our office and we're often asked for tech help, which we're happy to give. The one thing we most often get back is their guidance and experience at the level of personal client service. High tech, high touch also still has to come with a personal feel.

We're in an always-growing business and your comment is most appreciated.

This is true, it is the new way of doing business.  I have many of the old thinking agents in my circle and I just keep to myself about how I go about getting business.  They will never change and I don't have time to argue with them that if you don't use your email, have a website and blog among other things, you will be lost in the dust.  Time will tell them they should have been more flexible and changed with the times.

Great to hear this enthusiasm about the tech way of gaining business.  I like to keep up with whats happening elsewhere; because just like fashion, real estate trends tend to hit us later than other regions.

Sharon, You make some good points.  I have been in the real estate industry for 21 years and most of the agents who have not reinvented themselves and changed with the market are either out of the business or are seriously struggling.  The younger agents are having success much more quickly because the curve for them to learn and adapt new technology is almost instant.  The veteran agent who adapts can compete and in many cases can dominate because they have client base, the reputation and that is a very powerful combination.  Happy Selling!

Good post there, I'd say the reason a lot of agents are changing is because of the learning curve they think it takes to long to learn all of this.
