That's right. The magic green bar is updating again. Doing a random check it seems the page rank update was fairly generous with Active rain and localism. It seems most agent profiles there on localism are showing a pr of 3 and AR profiles a pr of 4. Of course, the tool bar is the last thing to be "updated".

Some of you back east may not be seeing the changes yet (at least Ken Smith hasn't yet). Will it make a difference?  Not really, although pr will show you just how trusted your site is to Google. So take it with a grain of salt and enjoy!  -Charles

Charles,

Could you please elaborate.  I don't know what you talking about.

Thanks,

Not sure what the green bar is...could you explain further?  I have noticed my SE rankings go up since I began posting on this site...

Aloha Jaculan,

What is the magic green bar and what is pr?

Jacqulyn- I'm not sure what this means either. If I put my name in, my AR blog is 1 and my localism content is 3-4 pages back.

Hi Jacqulyn...I join those above in requesting clarification.  It all sounds good, but what does it mean.

Regards...Jay

Jacqulyn, if you could add a link to Googles PR system, I think that would help.  I just starting checking it on occasion last year, prior to that I didn't know what it was.  Thanks so much, I always think it's good to know.

The green bar that many people refer to is the pagerank indicator that you see when you have the Google toolbar installed on your computer.

Here's a link that gives you more information.

Here is a definition of Page Rank. It is a rating based on the quantity and quality of links coming into a site. The toolbar Page Rank is the little green pixel you see if you have Page Rank display turned on in the Google Toolbar. What you see in the toolbar is vastly overrated in terms of importance. While internal page rank at Google changes daily (and is very important and something we will never see) the toolbar page rank changes a few times a year. A move up in TBPR does not mean that your site will do any better in the SERPs. You would really be better off just ignoring it and concentrate on where your site ranks, which is much more important in generating leads and sales. And if you look you will see plenty of sites with low (or even no) PR ranking much better than sites with high PR. It's a fun little tool but in the grand scheme of things it is pretty unimportant.

Thanks for the help.  I have the Google toolbar and no page rank button.  That is why I was so confused.  I just added it to my toolbar.

I check mine occasionally. I think I am addicted to seeing my stats.

my AR page is on page 1

my website is on page 4

and that is just googling my name. too bad there are a couple of quasi-famous people with my name.

Tom, I think you are confusing toolbar page rank with the SERP rank of your sites. Toolbar page rank is simply a graphical representation of the link popularity of your website and really not that important. SERP rank is the actual ranking of your site in the search engines and is VERY important.

Mark, PR is still valid in my opinion. A site has to have a many incoming links to rank well in the SERPs. As a result a site that ranks well will generally have a hirer PR than sites that don't. Not to say there isn't exceptions to the rule.

My AR profile/blog both to 4s, my new marketing blog a 3 and my real estate site to a 5. I am happy camper :)

05/01/2007 01:20 PM by Barnett Associates Real Estate, LLC

It is valid to a certain extent and if you have two sites who score fairly equally on the other algorithm factors the higher PR site will win out. But it is not the be all end all that too many people think it is. It is one factor in the Google algorithm and the biggest issue is that it is out of date. Right now there is an update but that is data extrapolated from the last 3 months or so while real page rank (what Google uses internally) is constantly updated.

That being said I am still pretty happy that my PR jumped a bit for our site and my personal blog. I know it is not nearly as important as some make it out to be but it is still neat to see that green bar move to the right, even just a bit.

Your right, it is just one peice of the larger puzzle and shouldn't be the only thing used when determining the quality of one's SEO. Seeing the little green bar move is always a bonus and gives some validation that some SEO startegies are working.

Thanks for the heads up Jacqulyn. I haven't seen the change yet. Hope something happens.
