111 Comments on Be On The Lookout ... SPAMMERS are Sneaking Into The Rain

I love it, Brad.  I used to report them all, but it's gotten sobad lately that I gave up and just started deleting them.  'Glad to hear you're gonna come down one these guys.  Way to go, Brad.

10/11/2008 07:09 PM by Margaret Woda, Crofton Maryland Real Estate (Long & Foster REALTORS)

Thanks Brad. I've gotten a couple of these in the past few weeks and just ignored and deleted them. Shame on me, what was I thinking? Next time I'll report the bums!

10/11/2008 07:09 PM by Jim Albano and Jean-Marie Vantuno North Jersey Real Estate Team/ Realtors® (Prudential Damiano Realty )

Brad, thanks for the warning and post. I have had a couple of those European, Nigerian, Ethiopian, pick a foreign country lottery type emails b/c of my AR association, however, I have not noticed and profiles being created. I will make sure and keep my "double naught spy" gear close by.

Thanks for the heads up,  I think I was  spammed  recently and will check to see if I can find the message.

Brad,

I have already been spammed once or twice but deleted it.  Next time it happens will notify you !  It seems like you do a great job of keeping "it" out.  Thanks !!! You guys rock : )

10/11/2008 07:26 PM by Christopher and Stephanie Somers - Realtors - Philadelphia Real Estate (RE/MAX Affiliates)

I am seeing a number of things thanks to AR. Some good, some bad. On the negative side:

1. I am getting a TON of calls on my cell phone (I publish my cell phone here) from people/companies trying to sell me things. THey always cite my AR profile in the pitch and state they want to do business with me. Then it's a lead company, or an advertising opportunity... etc.

2. Last night I opened my email to find 140 BOUNCED emails from people I supposedly emailed! It was a spam email. I never sent it out. But here i publish a different email from the email I normally use, so I believe the spammer found my email here. It's an email going out to probably hundreds or thousands of people using my address.

10/11/2008 07:27 PM by Erica Ramus - Realty Executives - 570-622-6006

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

We're only looking for the SPAMMERS who have taken the time to fill out a Profile on ActiveRain, not the one's who are trying to contact you via your email link on AR. Those you'll have to "skin" yourself.  The posse has found the missing "Blog" link and they've put it back!  Now..........

It's the Profile SPAMMERS we want!!

SMALL SUBTLE DISCLAIMER:

If you send me email of NON-Member SPAM, (meaning they have no profile here on ActiveRain)  then I get 500 of your points for not reading the post, and for spamming me!!  LOL~   I said it was small... haha

Brad,

Sign me up....I want a badge! like the one you posted!

Thanks for the rundown Brad. I'll keep my eyes open for culprits and run 'em in.

10/11/2008 07:45 PM by Judy Tuscano, NH Real Estate Professional (Prudential Verani Realty)

Thanks Brad. Spammers are a real pain in the xxx. I think government is the only way to kill them.

10/11/2008 08:06 PM by Huiting Zhuang,Sell your business overseas (ReMax Post Road Realty)

Robert - they must have a profile on AR in order for you to qualify for the 500 point "Reward!"

We can't prevent many of the outside world from contacting you via your email link, but we can delete and imprison those who sign up, fill out a profile, then spam our members as it's against our guidelines and terms of service which they obviously never take the time to read.  Hangings will take place at High Noon each Saturday at the High Corral.  Thanks.  :-)

Hi Erica -

1. There's not much I can do about the critters calling you since your number is placed here by choice and it is public.  You might want to consider changing it, or find a different way to handle those calls.

2. I would suggest using a spam control option on the email address you suggest here.  No matter what that email address is on AR, it is not published or visible by any other member or non member.  Once you reply to an email received here on AR, then your email address becomes visible.  Just be careful who you reply to.

10/11/2008 08:12 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

I'll be on the lookout.  I would also like to report the people that daily drop an advertisement about how great their company is and the "amazing" and crazy loan programs they can do.  But I bite my tongue.

10/11/2008 08:12 PM by Steve Kappre, Gloucester County, NJ Loan Officer/Certified Mortgage Planner (Treasury Mortgage)

Hi Brad-I'm happy to say no spammers so far but I'll keep a watch out for the evildoers and report it to you ASAP even without the 500 point bonus cause you're a hardworking and awesome guy. A lot of folks are already celebrating about the return of the much loved BLOGS button. News travels fast here in the rain. You might say they are "singing in the rain". It does make it easier to find your favorites(you being one of my favorites) but I worked around it. This network is awesome and it's free so if you have minor inconveniences every now and then.  No big deal! Did you ever dream of growing up and taking care of over 100,000 people? That's a pretty tall order for anyone but IMHO you're a natural and it sures helps to have such a great sense of humor which I've noticed you most definitely have. Hope you've had a great day. Take care and talk to you again.

10/11/2008 08:12 PM by Pat Preston (RE/MAX 1st Olympic)

I just deleted someone who spammed me with a lot of code in the comment section of one of my posts. It was weird to discover it there and I found myself wondering what on earth could that code do...

10/11/2008 08:14 PM by C Tann-Starr (TannStarr.com TannStarr.ws REMAX People Realty)

Thanks Brad, There are too many Roberts so I'm not sure that you were talking about us...Robert and I are a husband and wife team who share email etc. For him to have his own profile would be a duplication. Maybe it was another Robert.

10/11/2008 08:54 PM by Jani

Brad, There is an Indian Web site that spams almost every post on Feng Shui from anybody....I'll have to look it up.  I've reported it but apparently they sign on from another computer.  And some people actually ANSWER her!

10/11/2008 08:55 PM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

Thanks Brad, I will be on the lookout for any of these critters. Take care!

10/11/2008 09:03 PM by Teresa Harris (Holbrooks Real Estate, Inc.)

Top 100 Spammers on Active Rain list?  Something to think about.  After the profile spam list we could move on to the BS "leads" in the lead referral database which are actually solicitations for such.

10/11/2008 09:04 PM by Paul Slaybaugh, Scottsdale AZ Real Estate (Realty Executives)

Jani, you might want him to have his own profile so you guys can keep up with who is doing what. My hubby has a profile here. He hardly uses it but once in a while he will check in and post. One time he made a comment while my account was up and it confused the heck out of everybody. Actually, come to think of it, he's done it a couple of times (LOL). I had to "ban" him from blogging until he promised to only log in from his own computer in his own account. :-)

10/11/2008 09:06 PM by C Tann-Starr (TannStarr.com TannStarr.ws REMAX People Realty)

Brad - forget the hanging. I like letting the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits. You get an extra 1,000 points for creativity. Maybe you should have a contest for the most innovative way to punish and torture the perpetrators.

10/11/2008 09:15 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

Brad you got mail, I just sent one...Mary emailed me earlier.

10/11/2008 09:21 PM by Jeremy Blanton Myrtle Beach Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Chicora Real Estate)

I'm sorry Brad. I have gotten into the habit of just deleting them since its been frequent. I will start letting AR know.

10/11/2008 09:32 PM by Pamela Williamson Team Saint Louis, Missouri Real Estate (Nolting Real Estate and Development)

Ok, now I must set off on a quest to raid the messages of weeks ago... I'n sure there was one in there... You are (once again) super-terrific to think of all these details and ways to keep the city streets clean! thank you.

10/11/2008 09:33 PM by Mara Hawks, REALTOR®, Homes For Sale in Auburn-Opelika, Alabama, AU, Lee County (FIRST REALTY)

Brad - we just recently received one (with a profile) but of course we deleted it. Now I have to go look for in the deleted folder :) ~Rita P.S. I didn't appreciate it since it was directed to Brian and the person wanted a more, deeper conversation with him... bla bla... LOL.

10/11/2008 10:20 PM by Kenna & Co. Real Estate ~ Denver Luxury Homes

Hey Brad,

From now on, you're getting my spammer email. I turn in people about twice a month or more and never get no stinkin' 500 extra points! The one who keeps irking me is the blasted dryer vent cleaning guy. I have turned him in twice, LOL!

Spamming is worse on Facebook lately, have you noticed? Bizarre stuff creeping up there too.

Take care and I hope to get those points soon :)

Mary

10/11/2008 10:43 PM by Mary Pope-Handy, ABR, CRS, ePRO, SRES (Keller Williams Realty)

Brad - so you are just now figuring out the spammers are here? LOL.

Seriously, there are days when it can be pretty annoying, but the delte key works. But getting a response from AR (as I recently did) to block the offender who has a profile doesn't cut it in my book.  But I will keep reporting, AND I put a note in the comments, after deleting theirs, that is it not appropriate. Let's get these suckahs.

Jeff

10/11/2008 10:46 PM by Jeff Dowler ~ Carlsbad Real Estate ~ 760-840-1360 (RE/MAX Associates)

I hit the delete button so fast on most of these that I don't even recognize that they were there half of the time.

10/11/2008 11:22 PM by Lane Bailey - REALTOR & Car Guy (Diamond Dwellings Realty)

Comment Spam is one thing that still needs to be flagged as SPAM, but the spammers I am referring to will have a profile here on ActiveRain.  You can tell they are a spammer because they won't have anything on their Blog, you'll get an email like the one in this post, and their profile will look something like this:

These are the one's we want to catch that slip through the rain water net!  These are the ones I am referring to in this post.  If any new email (not comments) come to you via a profile like this, let me know and it's worth the BONUS points to have them removed from our community.  Thanks guys, and Ladies. :-)

10/11/2008 11:36 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Thanks Sheriff Brad. I turned one in today. Poor little broad from Africa - African Network Information Center - who wants me to help her...as she puts it "I humbly write to solicit for your partnership and assistance in the transfer and investment of my inheritance fund USD$17.5M from my late father who died mysteriously last Dec. I think she should just send me the check, it's just a easier process!

10/12/2008 04:52 AM by Greg Gorman - Naples Florida Real Estate (John R Wood Realtors)

Brad - glad to see this in place. I will watching out and looking forward to my 500 points.

10/12/2008 05:37 AM by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart )

Agreed. Your blogs really help out the newbies like myself to make sure we do not inadvertently do something that will make ourselves unpopular.

10/12/2008 06:55 AM by Ron Wysocarski Port Orange Florida Mortgage - Refinance (MetLife Home Loans - Loan Officer)

Thanks Brad for cleaning up A/R. I will be on look out for these villains.

10/12/2008 07:23 AM by Scott Barr Realtor soldbybarr.com (Keller Williams)

Brad - to think that I have been deleting all those points, I will try to remember that, although it is a whole lot simpler just to hit the delete key, or, the report as phishing button.

10/12/2008 07:28 AM by Mike Saunders (Keller Williams Realty - Greater Athens)

Tony - you can get the badge, just right click your mouse and "Save Image As"  or google seal generator, and you can make one of your very own.

10/12/2008 08:21 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Carolyn - thanks for the feature over at Club Chaos.  :-)

10/12/2008 08:22 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Steve - we have two links for you to use for those villians, "Delete" and "Report As Spam", use them as you see fit my friend.

10/12/2008 08:24 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Pat - no I never dreamed in a million years...LOL~  A sense of humor once in a while around here is an important attribute for keeping ones sanity.  Though spamming on many levels can be a real inconvenience, and we do need to keep it minimized, anything taken too seriously can be unhealthy.  Take the "Blog" link for example, I wonder how many members had to go in and get their Blood Pressure Medication prescriptions filled???  haha!  Is that the sense of humor you're referring to?  (Big Smile)

10/12/2008 08:31 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Carolyn - all you can do with those types of spam is delete them or click on the link to report them as spam.  That's comment spam, what I'm looking for is the email spammers, the ones who setup an account here just to send email to other members.  We do catch most of them, but last week, 3 got through.  DOH!!

10/12/2008 08:35 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Jani - that was a response to Robert Machado's comment, he was asking about a different type of spam.  FYI: It's ok for your Robert to have a profile on AR too, that's really up to you guys, whatever works best.

10/12/2008 08:39 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

I had a couple of these but just deleted them! This is one of the only site's where it has been a very rare occurrence to be spammed!

I will like you to keep doing a great job!

Thanks!

10/12/2008 08:40 AM by Mattie Lewis (AvenueOne Properties)

Carole - if they have a profile on AR that's similar to the one I placed as an example above, let me know the URL, and I'll investigate.  We'll do our best to keep the vermin out of your yard.  :-)

10/12/2008 08:41 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Paul - great!  You go ahead and work on your top 100 list,  I'll focus on trying to keep the spammers out of the AR email inboxes.  If you're needing help with the "referrals" portion of AR, you can go here for more assistance.

10/12/2008 08:54 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Sharon - LOL!~  Thanks for having such a great sense of humor, see ya soon...   :-))

10/12/2008 08:56 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Jeff - If only that were the case, I just thought it was really nice last week that these three individuals took the time out of their busy day to report these spammers that had slipped through our nets.  I felt it was a good neighborly thing to do in the community.  As I started to write them thank you emails, I realized maybe a few bonus points might show my honest and sincere appreciation, hence this post.

We can't stop all the spam that comes from email, or in comments, but we can remove the profiles and delete the ones that are only here for that reason.  You can see the sample of what I'm referring to in the comments above.  Comment Spam is not what I'm referring to here, it's email spam which clearly violates our guidelines and terms or service.

10/12/2008 09:06 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Mary - send ONLY the ones who have a profile here like the one sample I posted in the comments above.  If you get an email solicitation that seems odd like the one in this post, and you go to their AR profile and it looks like the sample, shoot me over those ONLY so I can remove them from the network.  I get enough SPAM email of my own already, I don't want you to send me all yours too!  LOL~  :-)

10/12/2008 09:11 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Very cool that you are offering this.  I have been hit, but it was a few weeks back.  I do not recall being hit with spam in the last few days.  Hopefully you guys are successful with tracking these people down though.  I have read in many other posts about people getting hit with Spam.  Thanks Brad!

10/12/2008 10:05 AM by John Cannata (Reliant Mortgage Ltd)

Well now, I see you are offering a reward for these scoundrels! I rarely see this and usually just delete them HOWEVER, in the future I will send them your way! Thanks!

10/12/2008 10:09 AM by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.)

we've got some stalkers in our midst too.           I haven't been spammed yet though!

Spam free so far...but thanks for the heads up!

10/12/2008 10:40 AM by Cecily Parks (Windermere Pacific West Properties)

Brad, Thanks for taking control of this  AR challenge..

I have been sending them directly to AR and contacting  bloggers when I see an obvious spam comment. You are making it easier to get this under control.

10/12/2008 10:41 AM by Margaret Rome- Baltimore, Md.-HomeRome.com (TREC-Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome)

Brad- I am glad the AR folks are taking such a proactive approach to managing spammers. I have been approached a couple of times so far. I will go back through my archives and see if I can find the emails to forward along.

Best,

Scott

10/12/2008 12:29 PM by Scott Cowan -Tacoma & Pierce County Area (Terry Wise & Associates)

Lane - that's not a bad habit at all!  LOL~

10/12/2008 12:31 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Greg - if they do by chance send you a check directly, don't forget about me, giv them my address too!!  LOL

10/12/2008 12:33 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Mike - continue to use the delete key, or report as spam for comments, this REWARD ONLY applies to the email spam from illegitimate members signing up on AR just to spam YOU.  It does not apply to comment spam, or the folks from Africa offering you retirement and college funds via your email!  :-))

10/12/2008 12:37 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Mattie - we do try our best, but as I said, occasionally, a few slip under the radar here, and manage to get a profile setup and start spamming members before we pick up the Blip on our radar screens.  The idea of Soliciting the help of members when this happens, only came because the three I mention in this post did it voluntarily with no expectations other that to help keep the community safe and SPAM free.  These are classic examples of how our many of our members are always looking out for others on this network.  :-)

10/12/2008 12:41 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

THANK YOU!  It's nice to know that AR is responding to SPAMmers, my pet peeve of networking groups.

10/12/2008 05:09 PM by Patrick Canavan - Orange County Real Estate Voice (Prudential California Realty)

I so wish I had seen this post prior to deleting the spam I had received the other day.

But rest assured, if they come back, I'll forwardd them right on over!

I wish I had seen this sooner as I've been deleting a lot of spam stuff lately... I probably had 50k worth of spam the past few months at 500 points a pop!

Well hello there my Spam-Fighting, AR Community Builder friend with the wicked sense of humor. I hope you've had a wonderful day. I do read a lot of the comments you leave for your commenters so yes, that sense of humor is very much evident even through the computer. They definitely tickle my funny bone and make me smile as well as (lol). Like this from the top of this blog(Be on the lookout for these illegitimate crusaders that deserve to have the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits)Sometimes you just have to be tough when it comes to certain things and that would certainly be tough. Makes me itch just thinking about it. I hate fleas!!! Of course I can be even tougher when it comes to the people who abuse their animals. Lets just say it would be much worse that the "fleas of a thousand camels" REALLY. Now, I hope that doesn't change your opinion of me that you've had so far. That is just something that is very near and dear to my heart. OK, I've rambled on long enough so I'll just close with this. Thank you so much for your offer of help in regards to my music tape. That is so incredibly nice and generous of you. You're a good man Brad Andersohn I'm 100% sincere about that or otherwise I wouldn't say it if I didn't genuinely mean and believe it.  Before I joined AR I wouldn't have ever thought you could know anything about a person's character just from words on a computer screen but I'm pleasantly pleased that indeed you can. At least here on AR. I'm very glad for AR for many reasons but one of the best reasons is meeting you and some other folks that I wouldn't have had the pleasure and privilege of knowing otherwise and that would have been such a loss. Talk to you again my friend. Your long winded friend in Va.

Brad- came here from Twitter....glad to see this.  I have been sending mine to Bob, but now that I know you are the new Sheriff in town for Spammers, I'll send them to you :)  Thanks....isn't that what you're saying about now...gee thanks guys LOL :)

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one getting those emails, and thank you for telling me what I can do about them.  I wasn't sure.  Now I know. :)

I was floored when I got the classic, "My husband was a prince in Zamboomba and I need your bank account......"  email.  Now I know what to look for to forward the info to AR.  Thanks for the heads up.

I hadn't a clue you were doing this!  They usually end up in my spam filter that other active rain members call the "Wall of China".  If I see anything pop up in my home page I will surf the spam and let you know :)
