Squirrels. Those bushy tailed little critters that abound in parks backyards and other wooded areas. Everyone has seen them.

We have dozens of them on our property, and they're fun, entertaining, and educational to watch.

Educational, sure. Here, let me launch into my sales analogy.

I've seen squirrels fight, run, chase each other, defend their territory. flee, jump from tree to tree and lib to limb, and bait the dogs, I imagine you have too if you've taken the time or been around them for very long.

Here's what I really respect about squirrels and where the sales tie-in occurs. Squirrels are boldly confident. They know how far that next tree is that they can jump to and how far away they can launch their jump to make it onto the tree when being chased by another squirrel or a dog. Did they have a mentor? Maybe they just learned it by practicing. I didn't ever see one with a tape measure. Whether they observed it from other squirrels, practiced it, or learned in an emergency, the point is that they know. They know that they know.

When a squirrel is being chased by another squirrel - for whatever reason - they run up the tree, jump from branch to branch, and even run full speed to the end of a tiny branch that seemingly can't even support their weight to jump onto a branch in another tree or onto the roof of the house. How does it know how far to jump? How can it do it at alarmingly full-speed? The only explanation is that they know that they know.

It's amazing to me that they don't occasionally misjudge the distance or their speed or other variables. I should think I would have seen several falling to the ground. I've only seen one squirrel ever fall - and he was pushed. He jumped right back on the tree and kept going.

When we know that we know that we know, we can be very confident (not arrogant or haughty) in our ability to ask the right questions, to help our customers find the exact property they're looking for, to have the answers ready to their questions, to not be thrown by objections, to ask for the sale and get the order, and to be extremely effective.

There's a great lesson from the squirrels. Let's develop that type of subconscious guiding system that we can engage at will without even thinking about the mechanics of it.

Hey Steve, I was wondering where you were hiding today...maybe in a tree?!??!??! You know you really may have something here, squirrels are pretty confident and they usually are pretty cleaver about getting what they want. It's funny what we can really learn from nature.... Have a GREAT week!!

Jeff,

I hope you're at that position, and from the million dollar awards you likely are. Great job. :)

Love your photos, and enjoyed the analogy! I watch those puppies around my home too. They're characters, aren't they?

Was the guy on the tree limb yelling at you?

Debi,

Thanks for your great comments. Yes, he was yelling at me about something - maybe he didn't want me taking his picture. :)

Yeah, yeah, privacy and all that! ;) I love nature photography, just about always have my camera hanging around my neck. It's alot of fun to get a great shot like those you have here.

Steve, You couldn't be more correct, squirrels are boldly confident. There are certain golf courses I play at that have large squirrel populations. If you play these same courses with some frequency, you learn which holes you need to be watching your food. I've had hot dogs, sandwiches, snickers, golf gloves (I'm sure they taste lousy) and many other things taken by these fun loving creatures. You haven't lived until you seen a squirrel make off with a fully garnished hot dog that is almost as large as the squirrels body!

Is that one eating your oranges? I can't blame him I bet they are wonderful!

Debi,

Squirrels are really fun subjects for photos. They sometimes will hold still on the ground, but seem to pose in the trees. :)

No hot dogs, but they pick my orange, mango, and tangerine trees clean. I barely get any of the fruit. :)

Hi Steve

Squirrels seem to be doing a lot of running around this time of year. If you watch them closely they have a propose this time of year that's to gather their food supply for this coming winter.  Sales professionals also need to gather their food stock of sales.

Good luck and success

That is an excellent observation. No one provides for the squirrels. No one provides for salespeople. :)

I was looking to the bottom of your post for a link to 'more information about squirrels'..lol...I watched a special on them once - and was amazed at how vicious

focused and cuthroaty goal -oriented they can be......hmmm that might be analogous to realtors too!  :-)

I do love watching the squirrels, and they are smart, but boy can they empty out my bird feeders, so matter how squirrel-proof they are!  We (realtors) have to be as smart and determined as they are to survive right now, at least in my market.

Who would have thought that we could learn so much for these cute little things, and yes, it is amazing to watch them jump from one branch to other and NEVER fall down.

You are right about the bird feeders. We used to have one with a lid held down by a spring. One squirrel would hold it open for 2 of his buddies. :)

We have loads of squirrels in our yard too - they sure know how to have a good time, foil the hawk, save for a rainy day and I have seen a few fall from trees but get up, shake themselves off and get up and move on.  Great analogy.

I've always loved squirrels but never thought of them this way!  Neat analogy!

We had some bird feeder projects that went awry one time so my daughter and I just let the bag of bird seed (10 lbs!) on the picnic table and forgot it.  One January morning, all the squirrels in the county had found it!  There must have been two dozen of them hopping back and forth on the table, running off, coming back, fighting, chasing, grabbing.

The squirrels never question themselves either. It happens to me that someone questions me and then I start to question myself - perhaps I need to be more squirrel-like and jump because I know that I know the branch is there to hold on to!

10/06/2008 05:34 PM by January Financial

Right on the mark, Steve.  I think it's born in the squirrels AND in us.  By that, I mean that I believe we are born to be excellent, and conditioned to be mediocre.  Our job is to undo all the negative conditioning that we receive from our environments as we grow up, and realize that we can do whatever we want.  Thanks for the excellent post.

10/06/2008 06:19 PM by Lyn Sims - Northwest Suburban Chicago Homes (RE/MAX Suburban)

Steve.. Great pictures.. did you take them?  The one thing about squirrels that isn't good with our job is that they collect all their nuts and bury them for winter.. which I'm sure you know.  But did you know that they don't remember when there bury them?  I would hate to say " I have a client, but I dont' remember who they are".  LOL.

Hi Steve,

Great post!  I agree that we can learn quite a bit from squirrels (and other animals).  Like you said, "they know what they know."  I also believe that they know what they have to do.  It's survival of the fittest.  If they don't go for it, they'll often suffer, starve or die.

Think how great we'd all be if we tried like our lives depended on it.

Best regards,
Mike

Carey,

The squirrels don't stop to question their ability or capabilty. That's the point I am making. When we have internalized our abilities we can just go for it. :)

Steve - Like your analogy.  Some people have that inate confidence and belief in themselves and others have to constantly work at it.  However you attain it Without a strong foundation if belief all the knowledge in the world won't be enough for success.  Idealy we need to combination of knowledge and belief.

I love to watch the squirrels too. I think this goes with the post on failures I just read - they seem to know where they can go, jump and land but if you see them fall or fail they just keep going.....trying harder next time to get it right. What a lesson. Thanx
