I just finished reading Cat Zwicker-Grant post where she asks I have Facebook and so what?  Did she sign up for this just to have imaginary pillow fights and find out what type of instrument she is?  While unfortunately you do have many people who send those crazy things daily, against popular demand, facebook can actually be useful.

I joined facebook a few months ago and really did't understand how it can help my business until just a few weeks ago.  Here is how you use facebook to make business for you.

The people who request to be your friend are those that either know you or want to get to know you.  It may be someone you went to school with, or worked with. Possibly someone who works in real estate at well, or mayve just lives in the same area as you.  Once you become friends with somone, they become part of your sphere of influence on the facebook network.  In fact, they will even bring more people to your facebook site by suggesting others to add you as a friend.

I moved from PA back 10 years ago and since then have had extremely limited conversations with my friends from PA.  Since joining facebook I have since been able to find many friends that have no clue I was involved with real estate now.  Because we have known each other in the past, they have a level of trust with me already and contact me for assistance with real estate.

TwitterThe current addition by Activerain of the twitter application for our posts & adding the twitter feed application for facebook has made it effortless for communicating my knowledge with my facebook SOI. I simply write my post on Activerain, it is automatically sent to twitter which sends to facebook, I don't have to do anything else.

When discussing effective ways to market yourself, SOI is always one of the first things that comes up.  We know how important it is to let our sphere know we are now selling real estate and allow them to send you leads.  This idea of using facebook to feed your SIO is kind of like sending out your newsletters but without the postage.

So while you may get Obama thrown at you 4 times a day, be in 32 pillow fights a week, you are also sharing your blog with a portion of your SOI on a regular basis.  Since you are always looking for ways to get more subscribers to you blog...this is just another simple way increase your readership through your friends on facebook.

Jeremy, I use Facebook too and it actually did bring me a new buyer!  I was so excited that I posted it in my blog just last week. Facebook has reconnected me with lots of old friends and has been great.  You are absolutely right, it is our SOI.  Personally, I only use Facebook for people I know in real life.  Good post!

Good advice JB.  I joined Facebook awhile back at the urging of my little sister.  I have connected with tons of H.S. people which feels odd & good.

Although I hate the pokes - I have reconnected with former high school friends I haven't heard from in years... SOI, of course :-)  Thanks for sharing .

This is an excellent way of describing it, Jeremy.  thanks for the post.  I've been struggling with understanding what I'm doing on FB.  It's incredibly time intensive and easy to get distracted.  <gr>  Do you actively add to your SOI by "friending up" with folks in related groups?  have you tried their targeted advertising yet?  I'm told it's the best bang for the buck around and that it has Google Adwords beat 2 - 1.

The power of Facebook is the feeds you can submit your blog to. I quit throwing sheep a long time ago, it was so annoying. Now if I can throw Obama, maybe I'll reconsider. :)

Hi Jeremy - I think facebook is great and have been getting traffic to my blog since I have been sending my posts there. I have also recieved comments from people in my local area. It works!

I hate all the junk that gets sent your way though.

Increasing and paying attention to your SOI is an important activity.  I just hate getting hit by hurling sheep.

Hi Jeremy!  You won't believe how I found this post!  I went to AR and searched FACEBOOK RSS FEEDS after spending about two hours trying to add my AR feed to Facebook!  I'm going to check out Twitter to see if my AR is feeding there and will see if I can make that transfer over to Facebook, like you said!  Wish me luck!

Okay, here's my problem-  I type http://www.ActiveRain.com/debe to use this as my feed on Twitter (and tried it on Facebook) and it keeps telling me that the URL is unknown (I've tried all lowercase letters as well)!  HELP!

Jeremy...Active Rain's linking to Twitter was absolutely brilliant. Did you get a chance to go to the Hard Rock before it closed?

Ok Debe,

First, go to twitter.com and make a login name & password...after you have that set up, go to your mysettings on your AR profile and enter the username and password...then AR will feed to you twitter.

OH, you rock Jeremy!  I got it!  WOOHOO!  I had my AR profile set up but, I just went back and checked and unchecked boxes, etc. and it worked!  Thanks so much!

Great post!  Thanks for the tip about automatically sending your post to twitter.  I did not know this existed and always posted my blog to twitter manually.  You just saved me loads of time.  Kudos.

Good thoughts.  I was thinking of doing this since the AR change, so now you convinced me.

11/07/2008 12:05 PM by Lyn Sims - Northwest Suburban Chicago Homes (RE/MAX Suburban)

Jeremy,

Great post.  I'm on the same boat.  I had Facebook for quite while but never did anything with it.  I added the AR to Twitter feature and the Twitter to Facebook.  It took a little time but not too difficult.  Now I visit Facebook almost everyday and look for new frineds to add to my online SOI.  Its easy and non confrontational.

thanks Jeremy...I am on both Twitter and Facebook but haven't been utilizing either place yet to its fullest potential...guess that is something I have to work on...
