Below is a copy of an email that my good friend Scot Fairbairn sent along to me. It may be hard to believe, but Scot may be even more Conservative than me LOL. However, most of his family members are die in the wool, long standing Democrats.
Apparently his sister was thinking about voting for Senator Obama, but something in her gut was telling her that maybe McCain was the right choice. He asked her to name 5 reasons she would vote for Obama and she came up with none.
After the exchange he decided to come up with his list of 5 reasons he was supporting John McCain. He wound up with ten!
So reprinted with his permission are his top ten reasons to vote for John McCain.

Wow, did you write this yourself? And if you did, can I have permission to reprint it or post it on my blog. I agree with everything you said.

Subject: My Top 10 reasons for Supporting John McCain
I decided to attempt articulate my reasons for supporting John McCain over Barack Obama.
I will admit my list of reasons for supporting John McCain pales in comparison to my reasons for not supporting Barak Obama. I have my own laundry list of reasons I am concerned about a McCain/Palin administration but there is no deal killer on the list and it also pales in comparison to my Obama/Biden list of concerns. I have attempted to keep this list focused on reasons I support McCain as opposed to reasons not to support Obama.
- While most of John McCain's speech at the Republican National Convention was status quo I was taken aback by his ending. I knew he was a POW but had never heard his story in its entirety. After telling this story he gave his reasoning for serving our country. Prior to this I was not real hip on McCain but after hearing this I realized that regardless of whether I agree with him or not Country First is not just a slogan, it is who John McCain is.
- An excerpt: I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn't my own man anymore. I was my country's. I'm not running for president because I think I'm blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God.
- You can watch the whole thing here or skip to any point you want. If you don't want to watch the whole thing jump to the section"POW story" and watch it until the end. http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/conventions/videos/20080904_MCCAIN_SPEECH.html#
- I believe John McCain is more apt to reach across the aisle and work with both parties in a bipartisan manner than Barack Obama.
- Examples: the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act (with Sen. Feingold), bipartisan legislation addressing immigration (with Sen. Kennedy), climate change (with Sen. Lieberman), patient bill of rights (with former Sen. Edwards)
- This article adds some interesting statistics: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/15/records-show-mccain-more-bipartisan/
- While its true that John McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time in the last year a lot of those votes had democratic support as well. His long history shows that he is a man that votes his convictions not the party line. Obama's short time in the senate has shown no signs of conviction only party line voting. http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/is_it_true_john_mccain_voted_with.html
- I believe that government should be of laws rather than of men. When it comes to Supreme Court justice appointments I believe that judges should interpret the law as to its meaning at the time it was implemented as best as is humanly possible. Too many judges legislate from the bench based on personal opinion and ideology. John McCain has supported such judges in the past and has promised to apply this philosophy in his appointments. He has said there will be no litmus test on any particular issue.
- John McCain will look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law and a proven commitment to judicial restraint (from http://www.johnmccain.com/decisioncenter/ )
- There is nothing on his position on his website so its difficult to ascertain where he stands on appointments. The best I could find was the following quote from Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor. While this sounds admirable it says nothing about adhering to the law which is what a judge is supposed to do. "Barack Obama has always believed that our courts should stand up for social and economic justice, and what's truly elitist is to appoint judges who will protect the powerful and leave ordinary Americans to fend for themselves." (from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/06/AR2008050602536_pf.html )
- I am against abortion and believe that life begins at conception. For the most part I am opposed to legislating morality. This issue is not just a moral issue but is about protecting the rights of those who cannot protect themselves. John McCain has stated that he believes that life begins at conception.
I have particular issues with Barack Obama on his extreme positions of this issue.
•1. His statement at the Saddleback forum "it's above my pay grade". Indicating he doesn't know or have a particular belief on when life begins is concerning. I'm not concerned that he doesn't know for sure or have any convictions on the issue. What is concerning is that when one is unsure of something I would think the wise choice would be to ere on the side of caution, especially when someone else's life may be at stake.
•2. He extends choice to include partial birth abortion. (He is ok with states prohibiting the practice)
•3. He voted against an Illinois bill to protect live birth abortions. The bill would have protected baby's that actually lived outside of the womb in a botched abortion attempt. This is a link to a video on YouTube. I researched and there are enough elements of its truthfulness to convince me. There is also evidence he lied about his record and has somewhat recanted after getting busted. The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYRpIf2F9NA. A link to factchecker.org: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/obama_and_infanticide.html
You can also Google these topics. There is plenty of spin out there.
•6. While the current administration claimed to be fiscal conservatives John McCain's record indicates he really is. Several examples are included in this Wall Street Journal article. http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB120295108223666913.html On our chances of getting unnecessary government spending back in line McCain is the clear choice.
•7. The Iraq war. Regardless of whether you believe or believed we should have gone in the first place or not, we are there now. Who is best qualified to handle the situation now? McCain rightly called for the now successful troop surge even though he was told it would be political suicide. There is lot's of debate to be had on other issues but when it comes to who is best qualified to be commander in chief of the military, McCain is the best choice. A majority of Americans agree with me on this issue.
•8. Foreign policy in general. If the debate didn't convince you that John McCain has a definitive understanding of the people, places and issues in this area nothing anyone can say will. Most importantly John McCain will not negotiate with terrorist nations like Iran and rightly believes now and previously that Iran is a threat. Obama's willingness to give Iran Presidential audience without any pre-conditions is just plain wrong. During the debate he extended that to willingness and considers it his right to unilaterally negotiate with anyone, anywhere at any time in this statement: OBAMA: So let's talk about this. First of all, Ahmadinejad is not the most powerful person in Iran. So he may not be the right person to talk to. But I reserve the right, as president of the United States to meet with anybody at a time and place of my choosing if I think it's going to keep America safe. While this may sound reasonable and even presidential the question is, should our president give audience to a foreign leader that has repeatedly stated a goal of obliterating one of our greatest allies (Israel) off the face of the earth? Does this not violate the country's long standing; we do not negotiate with terrorists' policy?
•9. Pork barrel and earmarks, John McCain's record is amongst the best in rejecting this type of spending. He does not request earmarks.
•a. Obama requested earmarks of $740,000,000 in 3 years, including $1,000,000 for the hospital his wife worked at. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/14/us/politics/14campaign.html
•10. And yes I also listen to my gut. Throw away all the research, the facts and the spin and my gut tells me that without question the best choice amongst the two primary candidates is John McCain.
