Phew!!!!

Those really nice people sitting in the United States Senate saved us last night. I mean all the dire warnings of the earth opening up and swalling us all if we didn't spend $700 billion. I don't know about you, but that was a close run thing.

Anyway, it would seem that a few other items slipped through as well as saving the world and i thought it might be useful to look at them.

Section 325 provides tax breaks for the wool research fund. Hmm... What exactly don't we know about wool? Makes nice clothes, hard to swallow.

Section 503 provides tax breaks for the manufacturers of wooden arrows for toys. This has a cost of around $6m. But wait - isn't this the kind of non pc toy we are trying to discourage our children from using? Maybe that's just me. Let's move on.

Puerto Rican and Virgin Island rum producers get $192 million. That's a good one as I don't know about you, but I know I'm going to need a lot more booze soon!

Section 309 provides for economic development in America. Well that one sounds good - until you understand that "America" is actually "American Samoa".

Joe Biden got more money for Amtrak. We all know how Joe loves to ride the train.

Section 502 with a $10 million price tag, provides "qualified television and film productions an extension of favorable expensing rules". Hollywood needs tax payer cash?

Now obviously I have not read the 435 pages. The problem is, I guarantee you that not a single Senator - voting for or against - read it either. Did no one even see one of these rediculous amendments and say "you are freakin joking right?" Not one of them??

I was born in the land of George III. The problem right now is we have 535 George IIIs in DC. I cannot imagine that the American people will allow this to continue much longer.

EVERY SINGLE SENATOR who cast a vote for this Bill last night, should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, even the "NO" votes because they didn't read it. VOTE AGAINST THE INCUMBANT on November 4.

ENOUGH AMERICA, ENOUGH!!

Aloha Simon,

I have to confess that I really felt that I needed this bill to go through so that the whole economic did not collapse.  Now, I'm thinking that this might be once again politics by fear, and another example of the trickle down theory where the Big Business get the bucks and what do we get.

Can these items be line item vetoed?? WHat a joke.  Who added all the pork?

Great, just great.  I'm just so thrilled that the National Association of Realtors wanted to back this bloated bill.  Just seeing that both Obama and McCain voted yes on this bill lets me know that both of them want bigger government.

Simon ~ I want to ask you and the American people one thing.

How can a Senator vote for a Bill and call it a good one, when none of them actually read it?

How about signing a mortgage without reading it, perhaps thats how we got in the bloody mess to begin with?

Apparently, the Senate and House members should already be familiar with the 300+ pages of "Tax Extenders", since they've already seen them before.  They had to add in a whole lot of "Scooby snacks" to get enough votes to pass the BIG ONE.

Someone on TV last week said this thing was going to be "festooned like a Christmas tree" before it was all over -- were they ever right!!!

Thanks for all the comments people. I know I pushed this out there in a lighthearted manner, but I do not feel lighthearted about what they just did. Feel free to read my other blog on the subject - "Bend over America".

Wow Simon, you are the man!!  Thanks for showing us some of the pork here.  This makes me sick and I don't see how The Republicans or Dems can stand for this.

I've been reading it too - it's disgraceful. There was a lot of horse trading going on here, stick in a piece of bacon over here to get his vote, slap on some lard there to buy her vote, ham hocks for the lady from Georgia's vote, baby backs for the representative from California, some smoked kielbasa for the Arkansas vote. So they put enough lipstick and bows and bells on the pig to attract enough votes but can't disguise the fact it's still a pig - and one we'll be stuck paying for long after I'm gone. How sad.
