Obviously it's a spider (I'm math-challenged, but I was able to count eight legs). Anybody recognize it?
What could it be hoping to catch for breakfast? The ladybugs hatched months ago and fanned out across the yard, and there are no aphids. I just hope it's not messin' with my bees!
If anybody can identify it, let me know. Just curious--I like to know the names of all the denizens of my garden, whether animal, vegetable, or mineral!
Your spider picture is great. I don't know what it is but your elegant description fits. I also garden here in Arizona. My most dreaded pest is not elegant. I found my first horned catepillar this year on my grape vines this morning. I immediately did all the preventive maintenance I know. They can eat alot of young leaves in a day. Anyway, thank you for the great pictures you post.
I told a customer the other day to wipe off a spider that looked a lot like that. I didn't want to hang around to find out any details. Jim Stafford's song makes a lot of sense in a way 'cause I sure don't like spiders and snakes! For that matter I don't like gators either.
All I can say is noooooo. I hate spiders. I'm not 100% positive this is a green lynx because the body is shorter but I'm not going to keep looking at the picture becuase I'll have nightmares.
Bless you for not being too jittery to photograph that eight-legged critter!
There are more spiders at the following link. You can even download their photos and put 'em up as wallpaper on your monitor-- if you're brave enough! :-)
Wow, thanks for all the comments and ID! I think it's a she, and a pregnant one to boot. If my suspicions are correct, I will post a follow-up photo soon.
She was actually more jittery about being photographed than I was about taking the picture, and she kept moving around the other side of the stalk from the camera. Although I am not fond of spiders, they have a role to play in the garden. However, I found a couple of images on your Google search of them consuming bees. Unacceptable!
I don't think I could handle spider wallpaper. Snakes I can deal with. Sharks I can calmly view at the aquarium. But 'gators--no way! They are horrible!
I have not came along any green spiders up here. I do find white spiders in unfinished basements up here. I call them Alien spiders, they look like they have cotton covering them.
Hee hee--I will be sure to wash the basil, or rather make my husband do it, since he's the chef!
The green lynx is supposed to be harmless to humans, but I wouldn't want to mess with her now that she's protecting her eggs. And those spiny legs are scary looking.
Now it's like when you learn a new word and you read it everywhere. There are green lynx spiders all over the place in our back yard! I saw one who had captured a bee, so their relocation to the front yard is imminent. I don't know if I can find them all, though.
Ewww, I have the creeps now! That's the strangest spider I've ever seen... we don't have those here in NY! Please tell me that those leaves are very tiny and that the spider is very small!!!!
Don't worry; those leaves are very tiny and the spider is very small.
The actual size of the spider is about half the size shown in the photo. But if it still creeps you out, you can always hold down the Ctrl key and roll your mousewheel down!
I recently did a post on this same spider eating a butterfly....they really are strange yet beautiful creatures. Mine prefer the pink roses to hide in.
