Every fourth Saturday in September, Medina Lake Betterment Association hosts the

                                                                                                                Cajun Festival

annual CAJUN FESTIVAL.  There is the Great Gumbo Cook-off similar to the famous Texas chili cook-offs.  Folks from all over these parts bring their famous and varied recipes to try to win the championship in Gumbo cooking.  Attendees get to try all the different ones for a nominal fee.

More Gumbo?

Some of the booths featured fried catfish, fries, sausage on a stick, crawfish ettouffee, jambalaya, Louisiana meat pies, crawfish pies, Red Beans and Rice, Cajun corn on the cob, bread pudding with whiskey sauce, pecan tarts and pralines, barbecued shrimp and more.  The one thing I had never tried was Boudin.  It was different and I think you have to develop a taste for it.  It is a sausage with rice and a few vegetables in it.  Nothing like what I thought it would taste like.  It is a little hot to the taste.

The Festival is a day of eating, drinking, listening to music and dancing, like a big Louisiana Party.  Everyone gets covered in purple, green and gold beads.  It is fun for all.  The kids try their hand at games and win prizes.  Everyone goes home tired and happy.

                                                                                       Dance exhibition

The proceeds go to the Medina Lake Betterment Association to be used for various community projects during the year.  It is held at the Civic Center and the Center is operated yearly with these funds.  The best thing about it is over 500 volunteers do all the work.  Can you imagine the planning and coordinating of 500 volunteers in a community of about 3000 people?  To me this is one of the most awesome things about the festival.

Louisiana Two Step

The Cajun Festival is well run and I was very impressed by the shuttle service to my car.  I parked at the Methodist Church and there were other parking lots as well.  The shuttle was run by volunteers driving the local school buses.  This is old time community involvement.  Way to go, Medina Lake!

I'll be back next year with my dancing shoes on!

Ricki, what a great festival in your area and you took some great photos as well. Incredible number of volunteers for a community that size.

It's very impressive isn't it Gary?  Wish we all had community involvement like that.  Lots of things would change.

Ricki, Don & I have been trying to get to the Medina Lake Cajun Festival for several years now.  Something else always comes up.  :(   I love Boudin!!!   It's made of rice, meat and spices -- kinda like Dirty Rice Dressing made into sausage.  I always have some in the freezer -- hmmm, now, I'm hungry for some Cajun food.  Glad you enjoyed the Cajun Festival -- maybe we'll get there next year.  I'll be wearing my dancing shoes so Don & I can show you & Don how to do a Cajun Two-Step. :)

Hi Judi,  I was thinking about you today and wishing I had called you early in the week and set it up for us to go together.  I thought I might see you there.  Let's plan next year to be there together. :)

Ricki, we usually watch for it and try to plan to go.  Wish you had called -- we would have loved it.  Yes, let's definitely plan to go together next year!  I'll put it on my calendar now!!!   Looking forward to it.  :)

Ricki, when we moved here we had no idea that there was such a big cajun influence but it is huge.  It sounds like a lot of fun.

Hi Marchel,    Yes, there are lots of Cajuns here and all over Texas.  I love the different foods we have in Texas because of the multiple kinds of people.  It keeps things interesting and fun.

Howdy Dale,     You would really love this one.  The food there is incredible.  Maybe you should plan on coming next year.  Judi & I are going to be there.

Marchel, there are a lot of Cajuns in Houston!!!   A lot of my family and friends moved there when they finished school for jobs -- especially in the oil industry.  I already have next year's Cajun Festival on my calendar.  I'm disappointed that we missed it this year.

Hi Judi,     We are going to have so much fun next year.  Wish we had planned on meeting together this year.

Ricki, We're looking forward to it.  I usually watch for it and lost track of time this year.  It's on my calendar now -- so we won't miss it.

Ricki,

Thanks for this great information.

I grew up in Port Arthur Texas about 20 miles from the Lousiana state line.  My mother was cajun so cajun food was a big part of the type of food we ate.

I hope you will give Boudin another chance.  I'm here to tell you a small corner grocery store called Nicks in Port Arthur makes the best.  They make it fresh every day, and sell out each day. They make about 600 pounds a week.

Ricki,  I agree with Richard.  You need to give Boudin another chance.

Hi Judi & Richard,     Maybe it was just too different to get a real taste of it.  I'll try it again just once.  If that many people like it, it must be good.  Richard,  come on down next Sept , Judi and I will be there and how about it Judi, let's make it a big Active Rain party! :)

Ricki,  we planned the first Texas Active Rain Barbeque and Gathering and it was a Texas Sized Success -- I'm game to do it again!!!!   CAJUN STYLE!!!

Ricki, you know, I always have my dancing shoes ready!!!   How did you like the music at the festival???   They usually have several bands playing Louisiana music -- Cajun, Zydeco...

10/03/2008 09:43 PM by Judi Morgan, San Antonio, TX Real Estate (Coldwell Banker D'Ann Harper, Realtors)

It was great.  There were many bands and I listened to the Zydeco one the most.  They even had some dancers there giving demonstrations and some from Louisiana.  It was fun.

Hi Ricki, I do not know how I missed this post but you know I am always a fan of any events that feature home grown and produced tasty food items! And I do love Zydeco music that is always prevalent at anything having to do with Cajun! Thanks Russell
