When someone steals or uses your credit card number without your permission your liability for unauthorized use is limited to $50.  If someone steals your card and uses it your credit card company cannot demand that you pay more than $50 of those charges especially for use on the internet.

Debit cvards work differently however.  You may be on the hook for up to $500 for unathorized transfers if you don't notify the credit card issuer within two business days after you notice your card is missing.
