Situational awareness. That's a big term which basically means understanding and being aware of what's going on around you. It means that you are paying attention to where you are, who's there with you, and the physical characteristics of both.
Situational awareness can be one of the top things that keeps you safe. It will keep you out of trouble in the first place, should you just be smart and avoid situations that may place you in a vulnerable position.
There are some basic tips to keep in mind. Most of these are common sense, but you'd be surprised how many people don't do this, or don't think about this.
First, keep your head up. Women are particularly bad about this, but many men are guilty too. Keep your head up and "on a swivel", as my dad said when teaching me to fly. If you look alert, you are much less desirable as a target. Many predators and thieves look for victims who won't notice them until the last moment, when it's too late. Don't be fishing around in a pocket book as you walk out to your car, fiddling with your phone, etc. Know what's around you.
Second, watch body language. Do the people you see appear normal or nervous? Have you seen the same man walk back and forth in front of your car three or four times? Is someone wearing innappropriate clothing for the climate, such as a heavy coat in the summer? Watch hands - they are the things that will hurt you.
Third, be aware of your position in the overall scheme of the physical layout. Are you in a parking garage that only has two exits? Are you in the basement of a home, with only the stairs going up as a way out?
Maintain awareness of your surroundings and your situation. If either changes for the worse, get out. There's no shame in being careful.
Those are some helpful tips on staying safe. I read them all and will work on doing a better job of applying them as I go about my daily business.
