Right now, there are 4,445 groups on Active Rain.  That's a lot of groups!   It's a lot of different focuses and interests, and the group is sort of the basic level of participation for our bloggers.

As a new blogger, I explored a lot of the groups and starting to join in and post to many of them.  Usually my posts were welcome, if they were noticed at all!  But, like most newbies, I did run up against some of the guidelines that many groups put up there - writing lovely posts that just didn't fit with whatever the group was all about.  And, while I joined a lot (a whole lot) of groups that looked promising, there were many that I never checked regularly and lost interest in.  So today, I unjoined a bunch of them.

And that got me to thinking about groups.  Which are the good ones?  How can a new blogger tell if a group with a great name is a great group?  Which ones are the "Must Joins"?  Here are some of my tips and picks:

The tips?

  • Look to see if there are recently featured articles.  If the group is alive and well, there should be recently posts featured within the last week or so..
  • Are most of the featured posts the group founders?  In my favorite groups, there are both, but mostly features from the members.
  • Is the group into something that interests you?  If so, join - at least for a time.
  • Is the group going to help you be a better blogger?  Then join.
  • Before you post to any group, read the group guidelines!  You don't post a partisan political rant on POSITIVE ATTITUDE for the Weary Soul.  Go instead to Blatant Politics, where it might be welcomed.
  • The most active and most subscribed groups are usually that way because they are fun, educational or inspirational - at least worth checking out!

The picks?  This is sort of dangerous, like trying to list your favorite bloggers - you're going to leave somebody you really love off your list!  So these are some of my personal picks.  You'll find your own, but these are where I started.

Active Rain Newbies:  this is the Active Rain Welcome Wagon for new bloggers, and it has a lot of fabulous information about the ins and outs of everything from earning points to earning gold stars.  There are great posts about blogging protocol and feeling your way around this amazing site.  This group is a great first stop on your road to blogging - and a good place to meet and compare notes with other newbies.

Realtors®:  This is the largest and most active group on Active Rain.  And you needn't be a Realtor® to join.  As an agent, most of my posts relating to my real estate practice go here, and if you are a different type of real estate professional, learn here about what agents think and find the equivalent group for staging (there are several good stagers groups) or lenders.

Addicted To Active Rain is the group for those of you who have fallen asleep with your laptop on your face, or who forgot to feed the cats because you were trying to get in your tenth post of the week late on a Saturday night.  And if you need one, your blog buddies might even be able to arrange an intervention for you!

Positive Attitude For The Weary Soul: founded by one of my favorite bloggers, Celeste "Sally" Cheeseman, this is a place to go when you feel like a little uplifting!  You can pretty much always find something here to give you some major warm fuzzies, or it's a good place to share your own.  It's the cute puppies and warm chocolate chip cookies spot on Active Rain.

Posts to Localism is pretty much of a "must join" as far as I'm concerned.  This is a group home for your, du-uh, Localism posts, in addition to funneling them into the "new" Localsim.  And as you are learning the Localism ropes, this is a good group to find featured posts that are great examples bloggers of doing it right.

The Art of Marketing You is another group that I found helpful and interesting.  Whether you are an agent, lender or stager, you'll find lots of new and effective ways to get your name out there.  And every so often, you'll read about something really amazing that you'd never have thought of on your own!

If Active Rain is your town, the groups are your neighborhood, bridge club, Weight Watchers, office, continuing ed classes, PTA meetings, and dog sitter.

So don't be shy!  Joining a group is as easy as pushing the "join" button, and you can un-join just as easily!  Just have fun with it!

This is interesting info on groups.  I still have trouble getting to groups.  By the time I read a few my my favorite bloggers each day, my time is up.  Am I just weird?

09/05/2008 08:55 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Patricia,

So many groups....so little time.

Thanks for the additional info,

Ann

I joined a gazillion groups and unjoined them all but about four. I'm a creature of comfort and wander until I feel "wanted". My groups are different from yours and yours are different from the next, but we may all overlap at some point. I find that's the beauty of the A|R community.

09/05/2008 09:02 PM by Craig W. Barrett - Hughesville MD Real Estate (RE/MAX 100)

Very needed advice.  I am still learning my way around sites of this nature.  Thanks for the sharing.

09/05/2008 09:06 PM by GULF ATLANTIC FUNDING GROUP

Patricia - I belong to a lot of groups.  Then when I want to read posts I look down the list of groups on the side of my site and decide what I want to learn about.  Of course there are some that I go to more often than others.  Marti and the art of marketing you are amazing and Marti's weekly post is awesome.

09/05/2008 09:18 PM by Pam Dent - REALTOR Charlottesville Virginia Homes and Horse Farms (Real Estate III)

Fran, thank you!

Barbara, yes, you are definately weird!

Ann, between the time I wrote this and posted it, another couple of groups showed up!

Craig, I totally agree!  I am totally attached to only one of them!  Won't say which one1

Earl, it's part o the fun of this place!

Pam, I gotta check out Marti!

09/05/2008 09:28 PM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

The groups sound like good recommendations.  I am in a couple, but I think I'll check the rest out.

09/05/2008 09:29 PM by Chastity Guevara (Century 21 All Star, Realtors)

Do you really think you should join a group if it has featured articles.  I think you should read some of the articles in the group before you join

09/05/2008 09:35 PM by Russ Ravary - Michigan Homes for sale - Michigan Real estate & Mortgage info (Remerica Hometown One)

We belong to too many groups right now - I have to go and thin them out I think. I also need to check your recommendation of Positive attitude for the weary soul. Thanks ~Rita

09/05/2008 09:36 PM by Kenna & Co. Real Estate ~ Denver Luxury Homes

Chastity, there is no shortage of groups to check out!

Russ, I think that having recently featured articles is an indication that the group is currently active.  Some of them sort of go dormant - if there are no featured posts, or if the last one was in March of 2007, it's probably not all that up with the moderators.

Rita, I'm thinning out a lot of groups, too!

Hi Patrica,

Great post for new active rain members. Than you for sharing.

Hi Pat, I like many of the Groups you like. It must be active or if it is dead and dying, what is the point? Don't forget Diary of a Realtor, the group Deb Brooks and I work with. It is very active.

Hi Pat,
I personally would like to see some of the inactive group disbanned and there are some so similiar they should be combined.

09/06/2008 08:26 AM by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

Pat, as always, great blog.  Sometimes I also join a group just to get back to the great information in it.  I may or may not post to it, but it could have useful information.  An example of that for me was Active Rain Gatherings. I've never posted there or gone to a gathering but because I joined, I later found someone trying to put together a gathering, and didn't know where to post it.  I told her to go join that group and post it there.  So it worked out.  I stay in the groups unless I really don't think it is worthwhile to stay.  Thanks again for your mention!

Good info, Pat.  I realized recently that I had been neglecting a group I started, so I have renewed the effort to get it going and keep it that way.  I'm going to give it about a month and if it doesn't pick up, I will be deleting it. I agree that there are way too many groups to keep up with.

09/06/2008 12:33 PM by Amanda Hall * Texas Real Estate Broker * (Hall Team Homes )

Great Info, i do find it disturbing however that people can join the Realtors group and do not have to be a Realtor.  Sales agents do not have to abide by the same ethics as Realtors.  I take pride in being a Realtor and I hope that others will as well as our industry needs to be more professional.  I will definatley check out the Realtor Group.  thanks, Mary

09/06/2008 01:15 PM by MARY IACOVELLI (EASTWOOD HOMES)

Great insight on a growing complication with all the groups and posting policies etc. Thanks for taking the time and writing this

Patricia - Thanks for a list of great groups!  I already belonged to one of them, but I joined a few of them...!  :)

09/06/2008 01:47 PM by Debi Ernst GRI, e-PRO, Broker/Sales Associate (St. Charles County, Missouri - Prudential Alliance Realtors)

hi Patricia, first thx for the netion of The Art Of Marketing You, I'm glad you enjoy it. Also re "read the group guidelines!  You don't post a partisan political rant on POSITIVE ATTITUDE for the Weary Soul.  Go instead to Blatant Politics, where it might be welcomed"...

We get a lot of off topic stuff, delete posts on a regular basis, people who continually post off topic stuff in our group are ignored, which for visibility, is worse than being deleted. I'm not sure why so many people don't understand that a group is just a topic. Have a great weekend!

09/06/2008 02:07 PM by The Blog Artist - marti garaughty (The Art Of Marketing You)

Patricia, thank you for the list!  I joined two new ones today after visiting them from your list.

09/06/2008 02:17 PM by Coldwell Banker La Jolla l Susan Laxson & Associates (Coldwell Banker Residential)

Patricia- Let it to the Washingtonian to be soooo well connected! Thanks for the list, I had not heard of Positive Attitude. . . so I am on my way there

09/06/2008 02:34 PM by Jane Page Thompson (The Carolina Real Estate Company)

Thanks for the great information! I joined "The Art of Marketing You"

09/06/2008 02:56 PM by Erica Muller (Right Moves Realty)

Thanks for the input on joining groups.  It can certainly be overwhelming at first.

09/06/2008 04:08 PM by Rebecca Cole (Carrollton Bank )

Patricia - since I'm a stuff-saver, I obviously do that with my groups as well. My justification is the same as Pam's - even though I don't participate in most of them very often, it's a good topic source for when I'm searching.

09/06/2008 04:39 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

Great post - I already belong to all of them - I love activerain!  Thanks!

09/06/2008 05:44 PM by Norma J Elkins Realtor Elkins Home Selling Team ( Exit Triple "E" Realty)

I didn't recognize your post with your new photo.

I always recommend people look to see which are the top 10 groups, and join them to get started.  They will find themselves attracted to other groups as they read other people's posts and see where they're posted.

09/06/2008 06:17 PM by Margaret Woda, Crofton Maryland Real Estate (Long & Foster REALTORS)

Thanks Patricia

For some reason I never joined any of the groups. Something I need to look into!

Thanks for the advice Patricia. I am still trying to learn my way around in here too.

09/06/2008 07:26 PM by Scott Mazza (Ticor Title)

A good idea also is to join groups with lots of members as to allow the best chance that your posts or comments will get noticed. There are a few too many groups we think.  Currently for about every 200 people there's a different group. Some groups should be condensed into one as many have similar guidelines and basis for posting.

09/06/2008 08:48 PM by Castellum Realty - Lancaster real estate - homes for sale in lancaster county PA (Castellum Realty LLC. - International Real Estate Brokerage)

Pat - Most of the ones you recommend are also ones I subscribe to.  Way too many group I can't keep up.

09/06/2008 09:20 PM by Jennifer Fivelsdal, Rhinebeck NY (Keller Williams Realty)

I belong to most of the groups you recommend and think that they are great as well.

09/07/2008 12:35 AM by Christine Donovan Costa Mesa Real Estate (Broker/Attorney) (Donovan Blatt Team - Donovan Group Realty)

Positive Attitude for the Weary Soul and Posts to Localism. I got to try those two. I am still looking for new groups to since I am planning on leaving some groups.

09/07/2008 01:04 AM by Lanre Folayan "Buy Washington DC Real Estate" (Exit Premier Realty")

Pat - Good idea - thinning out some of my groups.  I hadn't really thought of the recent activity point, thanks.

09/07/2008 03:30 AM by Virginia Hepp - Mesquite Nevada Real Estate Agent (ERA Brokers Consolidated - Mesquite NV Homes)

I need to clean up my groups as well, the list is getting so hard and some I don't even remember joining.

09/07/2008 08:53 AM by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (RE/MAX Masters, Inc.)

I thought it was interesting to see that your group list is just about identical to mine.  Just goes to show that great minds think alike!

09/07/2008 11:06 PM by Coeur d'Alene Real Estate - Janna Rankin Scharf, GRI, CSP, CLHMS, CNS (Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty)

Hi Pat,

I like your list and agree with the lack of time that allows us to participate in the number of Groups we may like to visit on a regular basis.  I do shudder a little with the idea of tagging a Group as "Not a Good Group" if they cease to hold our interest.  Could it be my needs or interest has changed?  If so, I move on.  Which is what you indicated that you do.  Thank you for the suggested Groups.

09/07/2008 11:22 PM by Derenda Grubb (CENTURY 21 Bessette Realty, Inc.)

Thanks so much Patricia, as a "newbie" it really helps to have some advice!

09/08/2008 12:38 PM by Daisy Montano (The Saavedra Team)

Yes, I've been in the business for a while, but now on active rain with post like this one Patricia did, I have the opportunity to be exposed to the whole world. Overload is possible, but wow. It's nice to have access to so many great minds. I feel like a kid with a new toy!
Thanks for all the great info everyone!

Great recommendation. Thanks for the information.

09/09/2008 03:59 PM by Freddy Saavedra, Certififed REO Specialist (RE/MAX Achievers)

Wow, Very well put.  I wish I would have read this a month ago!!   I was going to write a post about this topic after being deleted from several blogs but you did it much better than I could have.

09/09/2008 07:23 PM by Jane Grant - Southwest Real Estate, Inc.

Good ideas here. I've joined a bunch of groups, then forget what to blog to them. And you can only post a blog to 5 groups at a time.

I'm going to check out several of your suggestions. Is there anyway to organize the groups into "folders" on my own home page so that it's easier to find the right group to post to?

09/10/2008 09:45 PM by Linda Jandura North Carolina Realtor (Home Buyer & Seller Specialist)

Patricia,

I need to join a few more.  Thanks for the post.
