Yesterday I signed up for Skype.  This is a program that allows you to call from computer to computer from free.  All you need to do is download their program and have speakers & a microphone which most laptops & some desktops already have installed.

It works similar to some of the other messenger programs like AIM, Yahoo Messenger, & MSN Messenger.  The big advantage I see is how you can talk through your computer just as if you were on the phone.  If you have a webcam, you can also do video a video conference with someone.

Last night I tried out the calling & video features by talking to my brother-in-law who currently is in Berkeley, CA.  We were able to view each other and talk as if we were sitting across the table from each other.

So, how can we use skype for real estate? I am glad you asked!  In my area of the US, most of my sellers & buyers are not local.  This means that I can communicate with them for unlimited amount of time without it costing any money.  For me it is no big deal because I have an unlimited minutes program with my phone.  However not all my clients have that and they do not want to pay a long distance fee.  So, they can set up an account and we can discuss things through our computers for free.

For only $2.95 a month you can add unlimited calls to landlines & cell phones anywhere in the US & Canada.  For $9.95 you can add to anywhere in the world.  This is definitely much cheaper than digital phone.  If you use firefox on your computer, you can also install an add-on that will allow you to click on any number and dial directly from your computer.

So, if you are already using Skype, look me up!

Hey Jeremy,

I've been using Skype for a few months now and really love it. I use it predominately to talk to my International clients, but I also use it for domestic calls occassionally. great service.

I had a friend use in while his daughter was in Europe in the peace corp. Thought it was great idea for them. We do have a more typical local market and haven't thought about it for business.

Wow, I can't believe I signed up for something techy before you!?  We signed up for skype but use it for family calls out of the area.  I think the way you use it is great.  I don't have so many out of town clients.  Good idea for real estate.

I have been using Skype for three years.  I canceled my home phone two years ago.  We use it for almost everything.  I look forward to seeing you there!!!  C Tann-Starr is also a member.

My fiance and I used Skype to talk to each other when he was still in Saudi Arabia and I was here.  It worked great, that was 3-4 years ago.  Now he's home and he's working in my business.

Hi Jeremy,  I just signed up for the " Magic Jack " device.  You pay $40 for it which includes the first year unlimited calls and $20/yr after that !  Not totally sure if it is right for me but for $20/yr unlimited calls I will look at it.

I am from Scotland and with many friends & family still back there it is a great way to communicate.

I spend about half the time working from my home office and the other half the company office and in the field. And where I can see the advantage to having a link on our personal website saying "Click Here To Speak To Us Live", it would put an end to the best perk of working from home. With the video conferencing, no more would I be able to wear my ratty Iron Maiden concert tee and raggedy cut offs. Guess I'd have to shave too.

Maybe I could get one of those cut outs of a suit, tie and jacket to stick under my chin?

Jeremy, I put Skype on my computer and started having all kinds of computer issues. I dumped it. I guess I'll stick with my cell phone for now.

I use it to send IM's and make international calls.  It has worked well for me.

Skype is a great tool. I have been hesistant to use it with clients, but the quality has been improving over the last three years. Much success with it.

Jer- It was great speaking with you and seeing you while doing it!  Thanks for calling and using the video cam with Skype.  It was fun to see your office and more personal than IM comments.

My husband's company has five branches.  Everyone signs on and you are able to see thier status through out the day.  If they post as 'away' or 'busy' you don't have to waist time calling.  If you send a question they will get it when they are available again.  Also, meetings being held with offices located in other states are pretty cool.  It can do all kinds of things so please spend the time to check it out.  BTW- you can go to options and set yourself to 'private'.  Otherwise some weirdos may find you and just start talking.  The privacy option only allows people to send messages to you that you have approved to do so.
