When will I ever learn?

Sometimes I get these emails and warnings and just know they are not true and sometimes I check them out before I jump but I got caught in another urban legend this morning.  I read a blog by a friend who warned of a new regulation and offered a plan to avoid being party to many more solicitation calls on my cell phone.  I went ahead and registered as she suggested and wrote a quick blog to pass the word on to my readers also.  Then my office manager and several of my readers let me know this was false information.

I went to
www.snopes.com to check it out.  I found out it was not true and then I updated my blog post so that those who had already read it would know  I always say that I will remember to check things out first but then I forget.  I hope this reminder will help more of us remember to take a minute to check at Snopes before jumping on another bandwagon going nowhere.

I'm Paddy Pizappi -Work with Me and You'll be Happy! (Unless I send you on a wild goosechase because I don't follow my own advice!)

We all make mistakes. I did the same thing back in June or July. We are all HUMANS plus it took us away from our jobs cause it needed to be done and we all felt relief and so what if it really didn't need to be done. Those 5 minutes probably was the downtime we needed.  See it turned out to be a positive for a lot of us....

If this is the only mistake you make this year it will be 'easy riding'.

I got caught the same way you did.  I now have Snopes in my 'Favorites' list to check out these 'alerts' before I act...

These things happen. Lesson learned. Sometimes we need refresher courses. I bet it keeps you from making a bigger one.

I am to the point where any forwarded email from friends and family is probably not worht my time!

09/04/2008 08:12 AM by James C. Johnson (Legacy Real Estate)

Happens to the best of us!  Thanks for the reminder!

Paddy, Don't feel bad, we've ALL done it....probably more then a few times in fact.  Just to let you know I got emails on my Plagarism post because I left a live link in it.....the person said I was giving her "link love" through AR.  I am not sure if that's true because it turned out she finally removed MY post with HER name but I just thought I'd pass it along.

Hang in there, Paddy,

You learn and you go on, you had the courage to share your mistake so others can learn. Snopes is great!

Thanks,   Laurie

There is so much erroneous information out there.  Some of it causes a panic attack.  I guess I'm just ignoring a lot it now. ~ Evelyn

Don't worry about it.  You were trying to HELP!  It baffles me who the people are that put out untrue and useless info, what exactly is their purpose?

09/04/2008 08:41 AM by Kristin Moran ~ San Antonio, Texas ~ Real Estate (RE/MAX Access )

Thanks for all your support and comments.  I just hope that people will learn from my mistakes.  I really don't understand why people do this either.  It is a mystery why this starts in the first place and gets all us innocents involved in the foolishness.

Sometimes I check these out, most often I just delete them. Don't those who pass these emails on to others have something better to do with their time? Don't they care that they waste the time of others by passing on incorrect information?

In this age of (mis)information, it's always a good idea to try to verify before flooding the airwaves with more spam!  SNOPES is a great site to check things out but even they get it wrong occasionally so it's hard to know sometimes.

HOWEVER, I can say this for a fact because this friend of mine that knows this attorney in Florida and who may or may not work for Disney but is related to Mickey Mouse somehow said that if you write "I LOVE MICROSOFT" in every email you send, when you've surpassed 3000 emails, Bill Gates will personally call you and thank you for your support and send you a dividend check from Microsoft for whatever 10 shares is paying that day!  It's really amazing how technology works, isn't it!?

=)

I most often delete them too but this sounded right so I made the mistake.  Sometime valuable things might be missed by deleting before checking Jim

Where can I sign up Ron?  I should have at least 10 shares by now.:)

I wouldn't feel too bad... a lot of folks are quick to disperse this info because they want to help... and we sometimes jump on it because we trust the source.  As you say it pays to take a second and verify.

09/04/2008 02:46 PM by Fairbanks Ak Real Estate Broker Jesse Clifton (Jesse & Kathy Clifton, REALTORS 907-699-6024)

Good advice, Paddy.  I think it means you are a trusting person when you tend to believe what is presented.  It is a shame that some people want to abuse others' trust.

09/04/2008 04:36 PM by Lynn Afton, REALTOR® in area surrounding Big Rapids, Michigan (Greenridge Realty Oakmont)

Thanks Jesse I know this person did not do anything in spite and I really do love her but I should have checked it out first and I did not.

Lynn in this case it was just the situation of two trusting caringpeople trying to do good.  Thanks for the comment.

Paddy, we all get caught in it once in a while. We have faith. We believe and our friends are faithful and believe as well. Sometimes, we all try to help each other based upon what we know and it is always a good thing to be able to re-adjust when new information comes along that brings with it the opportunity to for us to correct our positions after we discover what it is we didn't know. I'm sure your buddy has adjusted her position as well. You guys have good hearts. :-)

You are right Carolyn.  Our hearts are always in the right place.  thanks.

Don't worry about it Barbara.  We have all done it once in a while that why I thought we should use it as a lesson.

Hi Michael Is this another internet based rumor?  I check you out every morning so I will be heading there shortly.

09/05/2008 05:01 AM by Paddy Pizappi PineBush & Hudson Valley NY Real Estate (RJ Smith Realty Real Estate Solutions)

Paddy--been there, done that!  Sometimes we have to remember to look beyond our trusted source (friend, family, etc.) and do a little more digging.  I have to laugh, though, because just as I was clicking on this post I saw your other post about the cell DNC list and thought "hmmm...I'll have to check that out next!" LOL

Thanks for the heads up and for the Snopes reminder!   When in doubt, "Snopes" it out...

Have a great weekend!

Paddy - my brother in-law is always sending out this kind of stuff. I keep sending him the snopes or other site references but he still hasn't figured out to check them out himself. Take care friend.

Morning Paddy,

These things happen. Sometimes our brain goes into hibernation for brief periods. For the most part, I don't believe anything I read in these e-mails, if I read them at all.

I am sour no one will take the error personal or hold it against you. All of us have been there at one time or another.

09/05/2008 09:00 AM by Harold (Hal) Place (A1 Connection Realty, Inc.)

Thanks for the comment Kim You have a great weekend too.

Maybe you could send him a link to this blog Mike LOL!  Have a good day.

Thanks Hal.  I just wish I would learn to look before I leap.

It happens!  It has happened to at least 90% of us here.  We apologize for sending out incorrect information and then move on.  Don't beat yourself up about it!  Now, if you deliberately send out that stuff knowing it's not correct, then you'd...  Wait!  You'd be a spammer and that's a different topic, isn't it?  hahahaahahah  Don't worry about it Paddy!
