I absolutely love reading about other people and getting to know them, but how can I really do that if your blog posts are

of listings and market information for your neighborhood, city, county, or state. What should I say? Nice house? I like the way you formatted your listings? Beautiful pictures?

If the first page of your blog contains

of listings and market information for your neighborhood, city, county, or state, I'm not going to make it to the second page.

I know we're in the real estate profession, but there is so much more to us than just our listings, isn't there?

I would suggest using the 80/20 rule: Make sure that at least 20% of your blog posts are about you and your personal interests, or even business interests aside from real estate. Maybe you're married to a plumber, or you really like the way your landscaper shapes your topiary each month. At least something besides

21 Comments on How not to get comments on your blog

I would have to agree with you on this one.  They don't comment on anything and their platform is matter of fact: here is my listing.

Hi Jim.  This is funny and true.  I am attempting to live by the 80/20 rule.  Didn't know it's proper name at the time.  I do see that daily though, scrolling down and down and down.

09/04/2008 08:39 AM by Kristin Moran ~ San Antonio, Texas ~ Real Estate (RE/MAX Access )

Jim:  The personal aspects of blogging are often missed in a professional blog like AR, and yet it is SOOOO important!  Thanks for pointing that out and I agree, 20% seems like a good number!

09/04/2008 08:39 AM by Steve Homer (The HBH Group (Keller Williams affiliate))

Good point. Creativity is key. And who doesn't like talking about themselves?! That 20% gives a nice flavor to AR. Thanks for the post.

I read quite a few posts and if I open the page and it is very lengthy I just scan some of the paragraph headers and then exit.

09/04/2008 08:43 AM by Bill Gillhespy Fort Myers Beach Realtor (Century 21 Tripower Realty)

Very good point.  When I see a long blog, I tend to not want to read the whole things.

Good to keep in short, but sweet.

Kind Regards,

Manolis

Everyone blogs differently and to different effect and results.  I've often read agents that blog almost exclusively in the MEMBERS ONLY mode and thought, "what a waste of time" because it doesn't get spidered by search engines and the general public doesn't see it, but yet they DO get a following of other agents that refer to them...

So it works differently based on everyone's plan.  I've learned to subscribe to those I like and that say something substantial and to just by pass a few that I know don't post things of interest to me.  I also check in on people I know NOTHING about just to see....and of course, I visit EVERYONE that comments on my blog!

Thanks for the pointer - I like the 80/20 rule - I'm sure the reader would be looking at another format if they wanted to see listings.

09/04/2008 08:52 AM by Hope Goss (Ventura Property Shoppe)

I don't know, I rather enjoy looking at a total stranger's listings in Tupelo, MS don't you??????  (No offense, Mississippians, it just came to mind, don't know why!!!)

09/04/2008 08:55 AM by Capital District Real Estate, Lewis Beynon (Keller Williams Realty, Capital District)

Jim, I have had the same experience when wanting to leave a comment.  The 80/20 rule sounds like a great idea.

This is funny stuff.  I have often gone to someone's blog after I see them commenting on mine a few times, only to find wall-to-wall boredom.

If the post is too long and hard to follow -- then I'll probably give up. ~ Evelyn

People blog for many reasons.  I think that the people who post only market reports and listings know that they will not receive many comments and that is OK with them.

09/04/2008 09:17 AM by Meridian Idaho Real Estate ~ Pam Pugmire (Bridgetower Real Estate)

I hope you'll pop over to my blog...I rarely put the listings on there and have often wondered the same thing.  Seems like listings should go somewhere else...than right there on the blog.

HI JIM!

Love how you made your point!  I wanted to read your entire post!  However, some posts don't make you feel that way if it's blah, blah, blah!!

09/04/2008 09:35 AM by YVETTE SMITH REALTOR IN WILLIAMSBURG VA WILLIAMSBURG VIRGINIA HOMES FOR SALE (LIZ MOORE & ASSOCIATES)

Jim, I agree. I usually just pass over these blogs and go on to the next one.

09/04/2008 10:04 AM by Michael Setunsky (Michael's Commercial LLC)

Jim - this one made me laugh. I think it is important to post market information some times (particularly if there is something significant in an area).

09/04/2008 11:01 AM by Sharon Paxson (Prudential California Realty)

Jim, I could not agree more.  When I see a blog with 40 pictures on it, I just skim past it and do not even ready it.

09/04/2008 01:25 PM by Thomas Hargreaves (Teamwork Financial Services)

Jim, I GET IT! I think a few missed it by their comment. Some have Nothing BUT Listings on their blog roll. I agree with the 80/20 rule. Tell us something about you, your talents, experience and write something of substance rather than 100% listings that say nothing about the agent who joined this community. In six weeks I have posted 45 times and only three are listings.

09/04/2008 06:50 PM by Linda Mae McCannon (20th Century Realty)

Jim - Great illustration.  The first week of the month my blog probably looks like that as  i post the market results from the past month.  Then its 3 weeks of other posts.  It works best for me if I update the market reports all at once so that they are current and if a consumer wants to compare different areas all of the reports are together and are talking about the same time frame.  I know not fun reading for my active rain friends.

09/04/2008 07:47 PM by Pam Dent - REALTOR Charlottesville Virginia Homes and Horse Farms (Real Estate III)

Hey, Linda Mae. I was visiting someone's site which is what resulted in this blog post, and I actually decided to see how many listing posts this person had. I got to something like page 27 and still nothing about the person. Just listing after listing after listing. Somehow I actually suspect that the person is quite interesting but, perhaps, not a good writer or something.

Pam—I like the way you do it. That, to me, would be legitimate.
