GRRRRRRRR.  I got completely pumped when I received an email today about women voting or shall I say not voting?

History is being made here ladies (chicas, women, girls, sisters)...let's make sure we are part of it! >

Remember?  If you will...it wasn't until 1920 that women were "given" the right to vote.

Women before us picketed the white house and were JAILED for carrying signs asking for the right to VOTE!

This started the infamous "night of terror" November 15, 1917 where 33 women stayed in prison without water because they DARED to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

Can you imagine?  What would those 33 women who fought so hard for WE WOMEN to waste away our right to vote?  to look at it as an OBLIGATION or an INCONVENIENCE...to forget to do it altogether?

I know you have houses to sell and deadlines to meet but HOWEVER & WHOMEVER you vote for, make sure you do.

GRRRRRRR........ In the words of Helen Reddy......

GRRRRRRRR.

I am glad to see this post. I think everyone should be out voting.

Have you read Lies My Teacher Told Me? It speaks a lot about Wilson and Helen Keller.

Ladies, ladies, ladies, sometime one has to choose between the lesser of two evils. So vote for the one that will do the least damage. Remember the women jailed in 1917 for your right to vote.

I am surprised at the amount of NON women that comment.  :).  Not a complaint, just a comment.

Sally - I'm curious...what are you ideas?

Shane - No, I haven't read it but rest assured, it's on my list now.  Thanks for the referral.

Roy - fancy signature for a newbie. How the heck do you do that?  I'm impressed.

My husband and I usually differ on political agendas.  So, if he votes earlier in the day than I do, I definitely have to make sure I get to the polls to cancel out his vote with mine.  What would we do without the right to express our own views!

Kristin - Everyone needs to remember that it is a responsibility to vote just as much as it is a right.  We all need to pay attention to the issues (not the rhetoric) and decide who will best serve the country.  Your call-to-arms is great.  I sincerely hope that others listen and act.

I can't imagine having to vote "to cancel out" someone else's vote, but I guess that's really what we are doing, aren't we? Hmmmmmmm. I'll have to try to find a more positive way to look at it since that view is too negative for me. Perhaps this: I vote to show the world what a wonderful place the United States of America is to live. Certain politicians can do damage to the country in the short term, but in the long term they, or their parties, can't prevent progress. It's just how each generation defines progress. Remember that Jesus was a progressive, perhaps even a liberal. The Romans kept him down in the short term, but look what happened in the long term.

I always vote.  Unfortunately I don't like our candidates so it is a challenge choosing the lesser evil.

Kristin - all should vote, but all should be informed voters, like Erik says. And for Jim, Woodrow Wilson was a progressive and a liberal. He was one of the leaders who wanted to keep the vote from women.

Hi Kristin,

Check out the movie, "Iron Jawed Angels," a powerful portrait of the events you describe.

Eye opening - we should never take our vote for granted.

Thanks!      Laurie

Thank you for this terrific post and the picture!  The best way to repay our grandmothers is to do what they would expect us to do and vote.

Many years ago my dad taught us kids that there cannot be a right without it being supported by a responsibility that has been accepted (thanks, Dad).  Voting is a right and a responsibility.

A few years ago my daughter taught me a lesson in activisim (Thanks, Jen).  The first year she was able to vote she provided "taxi" service to anyone who needed a ride to the polls regardless of whether she agreed with their political stance or not.  I offer that same service now.

Hopefully everyone will think carefully, examine the issues, and filter out the attacks that both sides are guilty of, then accept their responsibility and exercise their right!
