We've all done something by accident. Sometimes the outcomes were good. Sometimes, they weren't. Sometimes we lucked out.

While is nice to succeed or come out on top - even when it wasn't the precise plan, it's also nice to be intentional. To do things on purpose. To mean to do something. To take responsibility for our actions and their outcome.

I'm talking only sales and marketing here - not other areas of our lives (although it's certainly nice to be intentional there as well). I'm talking about being intentional in the way we plan our calendar, work our day, set our appointments, make our presentations, maintain contact with our customers, show property, foster relationships, promote our brand, establish our reputation, forge our image, and create our following.

We ultimately have the power to impact our business in these areas by maintaining focus and being intentional. Let's do it.

Paul,

Thank you. I appreciate your comments. Fundamentals are important - but you need to be intentional about them as well.

Self-discipline is difficult to learn after you're an adult, but I agree it's essential for a successful real estate career.

Colleen,

Being intentional is more than just self-discipline, although that's important. It' knowing what nneds to be done and then doing it.

Steve - Your comments are so relevant to charting a course for success.  Many sales professionals forget the crucial planning and deliberate activities that go into building a business. Thanks for sharing.

Lynn,

Thank you for adding the word "deliberate" - another way of saying intentional and on purpose.

I thought the key word was "plan." As my wise old grandmother told me (although I think she got it from someone else or failed to copyright it), "If you fail to plan, plan to fail."

And with apologies to George Harrison (Brainwashed, 2002, posthumously), "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." I like to know where I'm going and which road will take me there quickly and smoothly.

Russel,

Planning and being intentional are not the same thing. Having a plan means having a basic direction or guide - you may never use it. Being intentional means doing something deliberately because you wanted to - whether it was part of your overall plan or not. Getting people to like you is intentional - you work at it and that is the desired outcome. It may not be part of your plan.
