Ok, I am a Floridian who now lives and loves the North Carolina Mountains. I am becoming a Carolidian and wanted to share some thoughts a friend of mine thought I needed to know.

1. A possum is a flat animal who sleeps in the middle of the road.

2. There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 live in North Carolina

3. There are 10,000 types of spiders .  All 10,000 live in North Carolina and some no one has ever seen before.

4. Onced and Twiced are words

5. "Jaw-P? "  "Did ya'll go to the bathroom?"

6.  "Fixinto"  is one word

7. The word "Jeet" is actually a phrase meaning "Did you eat"?

8. People actually grow and eat Okra

9. YOU know what a "dawg" is

10. You think that the first day of deer seaon is a national holiday.

I'd like to add a couple!

You use "fix" as a verb. Example: I am fixing to go to the store.

And, any three letter word can be said as if it has 3 or more syllables. Example: Can is said CA-AAA-AN!

As a transplanted NY'er though, I love it here and I love the ways of my Tar Heel buddies!

You gotta love us here in North Carollina....we have a language all of our own.

I remember the first time someone said to me "I'm gonna get up with Jimmy about it"....I had no idea what they were talking about! I know now, that it means the same as "I'm going to get with Jimmy about it". I'm not sure where the "up" part came from...but I find myself saying it all the time now.

The other is "You-n's."  As in "Are you-n's going to to get up with Jimmy about it".

I love, love, love, North Carolina. I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could. Besides, if you're lucky enough to live in the mountains, you're lucky enough.

Ok, that's enough sayings for one night.

Hi AJ,
I have lived in NC pretty much all my life and most of these are "new and strange" to me.  Is it a mountain thing?

Hi Cynthia..Must be a Mountain thing and since I am soooo close to the TN border. I have been told that in some areas they have their own dialect.  AJ
