If you think about this statement, it can have a lot to do with life and real estate. But what if you never have been on a bike before? Today was a special day for my little Shortstop. (I know you think I call her that because of my love of Baseball, but I actually call her that because she is very short and I'm always telling her to stop it!)

Today my little Shortstop got her first bike. How can you remember how do to do something that you have never done before? Maybe we should think of new agents this way. Maybe they should have training wheels also, so they don't fall over as so many of first year agents do.

These agents get on the real estate bike, fall over, and never get back on, because they didn't have the training. Some get lucky like I did when I first rode a bike. I didn't want training wheels, I thought it would be easy. I got on that bike went down a very steep hill, then I realized I had no idea how to stop this thing I was on. I took a corner in to a friend's ¼ mile long driveway and hit his garage. (Thank goodness no one saw me do it!)

But, the next day I was back on that bike and learned how to break, but how many others could have done that? Well, I think real estate is the same way. One out of one thousand agents that get in the business without those training wheels will make it down the hill without crashing, but the other 999 will crash and never get back on.

So, if you know a new agent, help put some training wheels on there career along with a nice princess helmet and give them the start they need... to know that it is just like riding a bike, once you learn, you just never forget.

And to my daughter... I hope you enjoy your new bike and thanks for the real estate lesson at the same time.

HI TODD!

That's so sweet!  I know you don't forget, but you can get rusty.  I recently got on a bike and was like "whoa!!"  It took me a minute to get it together!!

Thanks for sharing,

Hi Todd~ The new agents really need mentors that care.  The Broker is really the one responsible, but  it is even better when a seasoned agent helps the new one's.  I had to learn the hard way and figure it out myself, but I am a self-starter and determined so it worked out ok and I hung in there.  Lots of newbie's get too frustated and won't do that.

Good morning Todd, What a great analogy...Thanks for sharing that photo of your beautiful little "shortstop"! And I'm so glad there are folks out there like YOU that are there to lend a hand (training wheels) to new agents.

Todd, Great pic.  We are debating taking the training wheels off of my daughter's bike.  She is probably ready, but I'm not sure that I am!  Anyway, your analogy is excellent.  I received a lot of good advice from my Broker that helped get me started on the right path.  However, I know many others who were just turned loose.

Hi Todd - That's a great picture!  Enjoy the moments, they grow up fast.  Seems like yesterday my little guy was on his fist bike.  He's learning to drive a car now!  By the way, love your blog!

Todd -- this is truly an exciting time for your daughter.  It is a real milestone when learning to ride that first new bike.  The analogy to real estate agents is right on!  I was fortunate to have "shadowed" my manager for almost a year!  I started to look and sound just like her (lol)!  Now, I have my own style, but that year was so valuable.

Great analogy Todd~ We all need training and mentors~ no matter how long we agents have been in the business. And it is always nice to have someone there to catch up when we fall!

TC,

Great post! Yes, and not only agents, but buyers and sellers as well!!! We don't have to teach them the real estate business, but it wouldn't hurt if they became better informed!!! Thanks,   Fran

Jean - Glad to hear that, I think they help us also! Their energy level and excitement can also boost our business.

Yvette - You do realize that I'm laughing at the visual of you right now.

Ahhhh, Todd. She is SO cute. I can remember my children getting their first bikes, and I can actually remember far enough back to when I was learning, falling, scraping my knees, getting up, and doing it all again. Great memory....;-)

Vickie - So many brokerages are just agent mills, hire anyone and everyone making money off the sales to their friends and family and when that dries up and the agent doesn't know what to do hires another one and lets them leave the business. It really is sad to have to see this happen.

Rebecca - I think those new agents can give me the energy back that I had when I first got in to the business and I can give them the experience I have to build theirs!

Erik - It happens all the time, where a new agent gets all the promises in the world and then when it comes time to start their education is no where to be found and they are just shoved out the front door and told to bring in business.

Karen - Thanks for the comment about the picture. Oh, I am so not ready for my kids to be ready to drive, I have my oldest turning 10 this month and I am a little worried already.

Joan - A whole year? WOW, that is one impressive manager and I hope you are repaying my mentoring someone else now.

Terrie - Most don't have that though and the first fall means they are out of the business for good.

Fran - I try to learn something new every time I have a closing from my title officer, I don't want to do their job, but it makes me a better agent. Because of that today at a close, I caught a huge error on the paperwork.

Lori - I think she was having a tad bit of fun and it was nice to take that bike on our camping trip as well.

Daniel - Business is what you make it, go out their and grab the business by the handle!

Teri - I'm not sure remembering your falls should be a good memory, but your kids' learning should be and I'm glad it was.
