pcWe are all driven by different things.  Are you driven by:

  • Expectations of others
  • Your own expectations
  • Goals
  • Money
  • Personal reward
  • Achievements
  • Competition
  • Helping others

Or by something else?

Motivation is the "drive" that moves us toward reaching an end.  That end may be something we covet or it may just be an accomplishment that is important only to you.  Our values tend to play an important role in what motivates us and each of us (because our values may differ) find importance in other things.

Regardless, we find personal satisfaction in reaching our goals, helping others, and simply knowing we can make a difference.

The differences we make may be recognized by only a few or perhaps many; and at times by no one but yourself.  Regardless (even though we all like to be recognized) we know the contributions we make on a daily basis and we know we are "difference makers."

helping children motivates me... unfortunately, they aren't the ones buying houses, but I'm super motivated when they become part of the picture.

Knowing that I am helping a family build a house that will become their home for many years motivates me and makes me feel proud of what I do for a living.

To be a "difference maker", and it will be an individual definition, of course, is probably the hallmark of all successful and long-term realtors.    Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Jon, this is a great question! My main motivation is my family and seeing the excitment of my clients when getting the keys for their new home or showing appreciation for helping them sell their home.

I really love selling real estate because of all of the wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) clients that I get to help with one of their lives most significant ventures!  It is very rewarding every time I go to settlements for all involved, especially when it is with first time home buyers...

Hi Jon,

Great post.  In the spirit of "Paying it Forward" you recently visited my blog and I love visiting the blogs of people that have given me something - whether a word, advice or a thank you.  When I saw this post I thought there are many things/people that motivate me but the three most important - my husband - he motivates me to take care of myself and to see the good in people and situations, my daughter - she motivates me to be open to all situations and switch gears quickly and lastly there's the sharing my ideas with clients and having them feel like it was the best thing ever suggested!  My business is helping my clients gain more success - it's what makes me successful - I love that feeling!
