Search Engines can not tell apart one image from another. In fact, as Matt Cutts of Google explains in the video, a search engine can not tell whether or not a picture is of a dog or a cat. Webmasters, however can describe images posted on their websites using "title" and "alt" attributes within the image tag. The video below explains in detail how to do just that.
Every real estate website has a great opportunity to improve their websites visibility on the search engines by just describing the photos of homes. It is also should be mentioned that real estate websites can benefit more than any other website, because the content that consists of listings, is unique because no one else has a listed (hopefully) the home you are selling.

Thank you, Vlad.  So...when I add a pic on my active rain blog, the description box that comes down when I click the tree has description and name.  Is this description the ALT tag?  For a listing - In the description area - I would put the address of the house?  Or 'living room of condo at 1234 Main St Mesquite NV.'

I keep hearing about adding ALT tags to pictures, where?  Do I use <> or does AR do that?

The "alt" tags filled in properly make a big difference in SEO.  I did it a while ago and am reaping the benefits!

I actually went to you website and was very impressed. So, I ended up with bookmarking it as well so that I can return tomorrow. Looks like you are from Russia, am I correct? Vlad, is it an abbreviation from Vladimir, or Vladislav? Thanks

John,

Vladimir will do, although my fellow Ukrainian would rather prefer "Volodymyr".... However here in the US Vlad seems to work the best. :)

@Virginia Hepp

Here on active rain when posting the image the description place as the value for "alt" attribute. However if you are confortable using HTML editor instead of WYSIWYG editor you can add title tag on by yourself. I generally try to keep image description to no more than 5 words. So I guess the adress of the property will be ok, but for sure the town shoudl be included.

I am trying to understand ALT tag as it keeps coming up.  Thank you for providing some clarification - it sounds like on AR, as long as I fill in the title, I am providing the ALT tag?  Is there any reason to rename the pictures before uploading?

Christine,

As long as you provide the ALT tage there is no reason to remane the picture file itself. However every digital camera creates the names of the pictures you take and numbers them like this "0001.jpg". Let say if the picture is of an apple, what Matt suggests in his video is to rename the file to "apple.jpg" however if you create ALT tags you should be fine. I think it is important to remeber not overdoing it. I try to keep them 5 to 7 words, otherwise it will look as spam.

I always added image tags to my photos, most of the time they describe the photo but sometimes they are just funny. I have posted on it here too, but still see many not do it. Great video, I subscribe to him on YouTube.

Welcome to Activerain !! I've been following your journey in the blogosphere !! Look forward to getting to know you more.

It was informative for sure. One thing I might not do is if you add a specific address the odds of someone googling that seems unlikely. If you stick to something like for my area Eau Claire home for sale buy a house, I wonder if doing a combination like that might be more effective. It seems more likely someone might be googling using those words rather than the actual listing itself. I guess it depends on what you are actually trying to achieve. Anyways great video and advice here.

Oh I had another question.. I noticed just in general when you are googling stuff that the trick to make google images come up seems to be by using the keyword image in your search. If you put image of blank blank blank as the alt text would that be an even more effective way of getting it out there?

Missy.

Thank you and I only wish I began blogging on ActiveRain a while back. What a great community.

Shane.

Tha is exactly what Matt Cautts is talking in the video about. It helps search engines to associate your images with the keywords used in discribing them in ALT tag.
