We have a few web properties with surprisingly high Google PageRank for the homepages. Ever since I discovered the high rankings, I am trying to figure out what might have triggered them. Besides bragging about it, I try to provide some details on the metrics; some may help you in your own SEO strategies.

http://listings.realbird.com - PageRank 3

This is a listing browser site which shows all the RealBird single property websites. Google's index has ~50,000 pages from this URL and it has a hierarchical internal link structure, which makes the internal link count very high. It is also linked from the sidebar of our ActiveRain blog, which seems to count as a distinct backward link on all of our AR posts (according to Google Webmaster Tools). Other than the unusually large number of pages in the index and the ongoing fresh content, I don't see other serious 3rd party links, which would justify PR3. Even more surprising is that over 90% of the 4,000 plus unique visitors per month arrive through search engine queries.

Theory: In the Listing Browser website's case, most likely the 1) careful content and internal linking design, 2) the unusually many distinct pages 3) with constantly updating fresh content does the trick.

http://www.WhatOneMillionBuys.com - PageRank 4

It is our pet blog. We are nowhere close to where we want to get this site to, but it already attracts thousands of visitors per month from all over the world. Currently it lists million dollar sales: homes through RealBird, luxury cars, jewelry and fine art deals etc.. We do have some good backward links and we always make sure to submit every post to as many social bookmarking sites as possible. We also utilize the "All in one SEO pack" plugin, which is a very good search engine optimization tool for self-hosted Wordpress blogs. It's a must have in my opinion.

Theory: 1) SEO 2) 700+ pages in Google's primary index already 3) some high quality backward links from prominent sites 4) many outgoing links (!)

http://activerain.com/blogs/realbird - PageRank 2

I swear it was PR 3 when I started to write this blog a few days ago :) Anyways, PR 2 is quite impressive and I think that it's due to AR internal link structure and that Google considers them as distinct human links, rather than standard navigations. We also had a few hits (Google Street View integration, Warrent Buffet post etc) which resulted in some valuable backward links. But I could not found any significant reason why we have PR 2, when other, more prominent bloggers on AR has lower or none on their AR blog homepage.

Theory: Hmm. Not sure in this case. One thing for sure: don't forget to use the AR sidebar links feature. Link to your website, other blogs, single property websites. Google seems to count them as distinct links from distinct pages.

http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/RealBird/ - PageRank 3

This is our buzz (aka lifestream) page on MyBlogLog. It has again a surprisingly good PageRank and more interestingly better than some heavy blogger. Just like in the previous examples, we have a very active buzz page because we feed it with all the RealBird listings and all the blogs we author. Furthermore, we have many contacts and their updates are also streamed here. I noticed through Google Alerts that Google started to index these buzz pages recently.

There are some common metrics which seem to be consistent across all of these surprisingly highly ranked pages. All 4 web properties have a lot of distinct pages known by Google (in Google's primary index). They are also well linked to each other internally and have plenty outgoing links. Furthermore, and this seems to be even more convincing, all have frequent updates. Just like with ActiveRain itself, once Google notices many fresh content coming from a particular source, Google starts paying more attention. I have no idea how this translates into PageRank, nor do I know what value PageRank has in terms of absolute metrics, but frequent updates (e.g. blogs with ongoing content) seem to rank better nowadays.

I'd like to see other high ranking pages on ActiveRain. (You can check the PageRank of any page using the Google Toolbar. You will have to explicitly enable the PageRank feature either during the setup or through the Google Toolbar "Settings>Options" under the "More" menu.)

If you have a ranked AR post or homepage please post it as a comment following the syntax, that I used  above:

Url (feel free to link it) and add the current PageRank after it.

Please post only 1) ActiveRain links and 2) only those which belongs to you: Your profile page, your AR blog homepage or a particular AR blog post you authored.

About how long did it take for you to see results like that? I am just curious for a time frame.

Hi Zoltan, I just do not get it . How do you link it? I.E.: my website or the AR profile? Let me know your Endre

Zoltan - LOVE your analysis.  It is so interesting to see certain things climb through the ranks and others just fizzle.

Endre - Your AR blog has a Links section on the sidebar. When you are logged in, there is a [add/remove] link next to the title. You can add links there. Make sure you use descriptive title (it should be both informative for humans and for search engines as well). I saw many agents linking not only their outside websites, but even their single property websites. All of your individual blog posts will have these links on the sidebar and the last time I checked Google Webmaster Tools reported them as distinct backward links. Let me emphasize again that I am not sure about the absolute value of these best practices, only the fact (or what seems to be a fact), that they seem to help.

Shane,

Great question, but we did not track this metrics from the beginning. Here are the approximate timeframes:

http://lstings.realbird.com - about 9 months

http://www.WhatOneMillionBuys.com - about 4 months

http://activerain.com/blogs/realbird - about 16 months

http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/RealBird/ - I am not sure, we are using MLB for a long time, but I can not recall since when and the buzz page feature is quite new on MLB

Tina - Our main website's homepage has PR 5, but it has a LOT of backward links pointing to it. The 4 listed above really surprised me as none of them are highly promoted or known. I have the feeling the high frequency of fresh and valid content has a lot to do with it, plus the distribution through 3rd party sites (Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx etc.). Google's algorithm must be one of the most complex logics ever written as a software code and is continously changed, so all of my "proves" above are just theories, but exciting to see some patterns nevertheless.

Hi Zoltan - I have noticed some of your results in the serps. As you know my individual listing for 10 Cardinal Circle in Medway has PR - I think 2 or 3 if I remember correctly.

I am curious about the mybloglog site. I used to have a pr3 and now I am not ranked. For the life of me I can not figure out why that would happen. I have tons of contacts and have not done anything different that I am aware of...any thoughts?

There is several ways to get high rank. You can link high pr pages to your website but this will not  mean you will have high earch result.

09/04/2008 11:50 AM by SEOSubmitter.com

Bill - The ranking on the MyBlogLog buzz pages does look viotile. As I said, I could not find any reasons why our own MLB buzz has such a high rank currently compared to other heavy hitters, who have lower or none. But just like your tweet seem to suggest, Google may be just getting into refining the indexing and ranking mechanism of lifestreams.

Your AR blog at

http://activerain.com/blogs/metrowesthomes -  has PR 4 currently, that's very high

Zoltan My AR site is a PR(2) too :)  Great Pageranks you have there!

09/06/2008 01:07 AM by Justin Williams - Loan Officer (Prosperity Mortgage)

Justin - Nice. Feel free to add the link to your PR 2 AR page in the comment below. I'd like to encourage others to share and to find the highest PR AR page that way (other than AR's own pages like the homepage)

09/06/2008 01:44 AM by Real Bird (RealBird Inc.)

Thanks for the information.  I'm trying to get my ranking up and always appreciate information such as yours.

09/06/2008 08:40 AM by Jon Wnoroski, Summit County Realtor (Geneva Chervenic Realty, Inc.)

Zoltan - Ya the PR at AR is great. You can't get any better than PR4 at the moment. I am hoping the main page jumps so I go up with it. Lets shoot for a PR7 home page:)

09/06/2008 11:26 AM by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty)

Jon - You are welcome. Good luck.

Bill - What makes you think that the homepage rank and other page rank relates that way? Interesting. AR homepage is at PR6 now.

Zoltan - my Active Rain Real Estate Blog is a 2 -  my Active Rain Profile is a 3.

Several of my individual posts had a ranking of 1 or 2 - they went to 0.  I think it may have been when I activated my AR outside blog - I might be getting penalized for duplicate content.  No clue here about this stuff.

But my posts and website still are on high 1st page Google for my keywords.

09/07/2008 04:07 PM by Virginia Hepp - Mesquite Nevada Real Estate Agent (ERA Brokers Consolidated - Mesquite NV Homes)

It has been at PR6 for a while. It has not moved in the last few updates.

09/07/2008 04:40 PM by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty)

Virginia - That nice. I noticed the same: our profile page is 3 while the blog home is 2. Wonder why the profile page is higher? I think it is because all the comments you leave on other people's posts point to your profile page rather than to your blog home? I always wanted AR to point to our post - it would make the conversation more fluent - and I think that would lead to higher PR on the blog home, rather than the static profile page.

09/07/2008 09:18 PM by Real Bird (RealBird Inc.)

Bill - For you, your blog home is higher (4) than your profile page (3). Might it be due to your extensive presence and link back from other networks and your blog being featured on other sites?

I think that AR changing the comment author link from the profile to the blog homepage would make direct correlation between user participation (commenting) and Google ranking of individual blogs. Having higher PR on the blog homepage (vs. the profile page) s is way more valuable I think. Consumers care about content first (articles, listings) and the author second; once they found the content valuable.

Thanks for all your input, as always !

09/07/2008 09:25 PM by Real Bird (RealBird Inc.)

Zoltan - that makes sense - I comment a lot.  Maybe I should put more links from my profile page to my own blogs?

09/07/2008 11:17 PM by Virginia Hepp - Mesquite Nevada Real Estate Agent (ERA Brokers Consolidated - Mesquite NV Homes)

Virginia - Of course it's only a theory, but I have that feeling ... :) I think we should ask AR about this. I think linking to one's blog rather than the profile makes more sense for readers and for SEO as well - IMHO. When I see an interesting comment and I click through (as a reader) I would like to see the commenter's blog (what else that person has to say), rather than the standard profile page.
