Yesterday, while I was out and about, I spoke with two of my ActiveRain friends on the phonePaul Slaybaugh called me and we chatted for awhile, then he had to go because he was busy with his two sons.  I later called Adam Waldman and he had to call me back because he was watching "Hard Knocks", the Dallas Cowboys training camp show on HBO, with his son. 

After speaking with each of these guys, I thought about the time flexibility that real estate can afford to us, and how fortunate I am to be able to make a good living in a business that allows me still to have ample time with my family. 

As I was driving, I stopped at a light near my office and looked in my rear-view mirror.  I noticed an older lady driving and speaking in a very animated fashion to the younger lady who was her passenger.  I don't know if she was a real estate agent or not, but it reminded me of many meetings that I have had with clients, driving them around and getting to know them. 

You mean I can actually get PAID to make friends?

In a sense, yes.  I certainly can't claim that everyone in real estate conducts their business in the same way that I do, but I typically end up befriending my clients during the sales process.  Additionally, through my online social networking efforts, my friendships have begun to pay dividends in the form of solid referrals, one of which I closed last week. 

In my humble opinion, the essence of good marketing begins with personal networking. 

I have owned my own brokerage for almost four years, and I always tell my agents that clients are not typically brand-loyal when it comes to real estate.  In other words, most people are more interested in their agent as a person than with the specific company affiliation.  Of course, there are exceptions, but generally people tend to use the agent that they like and who provides the necessary information. 

When it comes to real estate sales, WE ARE the product.  Rather than being traditional salespeople, we are responsible for selling ourselves as people first.  To my way of thinking, this should be the easiest sale of all.  If you are not comfortable in your own skin, this is probably not the right field for you.  However, if you can manage to package yourself as the likeable, honest provider of local info, you are well on your way to capturing the business. 

As real estate agents and brokers, we are business owners first and foremost, and I think it's important to keep that in mind when dealing with our clients and potential clients.  If you treat it as an actual business, you don't sweat each individual transaction, because you are focused on the larger goal of growing your business over time, and maintaining your reputation so that you can keep the doors open.

In a nutshell, self-employment is not for everyone, but it is the only choice that I can imagine making if I had it to do over again.

Its a tough decision to make. I think you need to do a lot of research before jumping in, but so far I dont have any regrets!

Where does the free time fit in? I work 14-16 hours a day six days a week, and 8 on Sunday. My clients demand so much of my time, and AR consumes any open times.

I don't think that I have EVER worked harder for less money. But I realize that some do very well and other do fine but the average agent NETS less than $30K.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm just not feeling very flexible these days.

Jason- After years behind a desk in my 'other' life and now years outside a desk in my 'now' life I take my 'now' life hands down. Yes it took adjustment but the rewards, the friendships, and the sense of accomplishment are beyond words. As you say, it isn't for everyone but for us that have made the choice and found it fulfilling it is just perfect

MEL - Yes, it really is.  Not perfect, but it never will be.

RICHARD - I have worked those types of hours before, but not for long stretches.  I very rarely work on Sundays, yet I make about three times what my friends at Dell are making.  Perhaps it is because I have good agents working for me, and I have the luxury to pick and choose clients for the most part.  I have more free time than most of my friends (as you can tell from my involvement here),yet I have three children at home and run a brokerage with 15 agents.  I'm not sure why it is so different.  I would like to think that it is my efficiency, but I don't know if that is true or not.  :)  As I indicated in the post, I feel blessed.

Jason - I agree.  Self-employment is the way to go.  My husband has owned his own business since 2000.  He works with our sons.  We think it has taught them how to be responsible and work diligently.  We wouldn't change a thing...  :)

It is the flexibility that I like in this field.  I used to work like a dog at my other career and hated it.  I had no time for myself nor my family.  I made tons of money then but I could not enjoy what the money brought me.  Money is not everything.  I have no regrets for changing careers.

Jason... pretty much point on, hence why it was featured....   I would change anything either and would do this again. Jason,  I enjoyed reading your post and I agree with you. My husband and I left RE/MAX a couple of years ago and started our own brokerage.  We were a bit nervous not knowing what would happen without the recognized national brand name.  But we have done fine and don't regret working for ourselves.  I really am glad that I made the career change to real estate several years ago and also am glad for the flexibility this career offers.

First of all, Jason, I love your photos.  This is a nicely written post.  I am with a big franchise, and still building my real estate career.  I enjoy being with most of my clients  and I do end up being friends with them. I think this profession does provide that opportunity, making money and friends at the same time.  When done right and honorably, those friends stay with you and send referrals your way.

I agree with Jason that buyers are not typically brand loyal, hence why individual agents seem to shine.  But this addage can also be true when an entire brokerage acts as one, hiring like-minded realtors. One definetely has to brand themselves and showcase what he or she is best at. Real Estate is definetely a great profession to be in if you enjoy freedom, making your own hours, and being in control of your own destiny.

Nicely stated.  I agree with all you've said.  This is one of the few sales jobs in the country where the clients believe that we're helping the client instead of trying to push a product on them.

JASON - Thanks for the mention.  Agents that understand that they are the product will not be as concerned about the broker name on the business card.  It's more about what the broker can provide in the way of support and fair dealings that matters most.  This is the main reason that people should brand themselves.  If they ever decide to change brokers, the transition will be much smoother.

Hello Jason, I agree with you. I love being an entrepreneur and I love real estate. It affords me the opportunity to use all these skills I've gathered and apply them. We are the product and I love that point. My clients asked me last night "what does the broker do?" and my response what that he affords us the brand awareness on a larger scale....but I was thinking at the same time......it's a two-sided coin, both being important! I always build my own business and I am independent. I also, however love my group and work with the best. It's all good! You do such good work, my friend!

Jason, as you know I made the decision to transition from a career in law to a career in real estate.  One of the main reasons was the freedom.  I could have spent 8-12 years working away trying to make partner servicing "their clients" sitting at a desk in an office pouring over papers.  Instead I decided to build my own business, work for my own clients, and eat 3 meals a day with my wife.

Jason, I love the Freedom, being a Realtor affords me. I started my career, when I was a stay at home mom. My youngest was in 1/2 day kindergarten at the time and the others, 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th. That's a lot of kids and events. I never missed a one to this day. Too important they come first !!

When they would get their soccer, violin, piano, football, dance schedules, I typed them in OUTLOOK and blocked them out. They were my "appointments". My career grew every year and yet they were and still are my first priority.

I think both go hand in hand....sometimes I'm told they picked me because of me...not the name of the company but I've also had people tell me they saw the name of the company behind me so they figured I was a good agent to work with. I like to become friends with the clients but sometimes you have to know when to step back and let them be.

Not a bad gig at all. There are days when I barely get to look at my family, but there are also days where I clear my schedule for a day at the park. Yesterday, it was daddy day care. This weekend, it's full speed ahead with work. The bottom line is that I choose how it all fits together, not some corporate drone. I typically end up with a new friend at the end of a transaction as well, and I couldn't imagine another profession which would allow such a possibility. It is funny to me, Jason, that one of the most attractive features of being in the REAL ESTATE BUSINESS is also the one feature that puts most agents OUT of the business.

That flexibility that you speak of is certainly attractive.  I mean, yesterday, I  met a seller and took a listing and 2 hours later, I stopped by Toys R Us to pick up a toy for a birthday party my family is going to on Saturday.  I did my work and I had a little flexibility to pick up the present and relieve stress from us on the day of the party!

However, I know a lot of people who put that "personal flex" first and business second, leading most times, to disasterous consequences!

Jason, I LOVE being a real estate broker. I also love working from my home. TLW would say that I work all the time since real estate is constantly on my mind and I am constantly on the phone BUT I mostly conduct business in my PJs or sitting out by the pool. It doesn't get any better than that.

If folks understood that the product we are selling is ourselves their business would much easier. How hard can it be to listen to people and then help then achieve their goals?

Yes Jason, it is an amazing business that we are blessed to be in.  The flexibility and the friendships that we make really make it seem like less of a 'job'.  Like you, I often think "I get paid for this?  I'm just out having fun with some nice people on a nice day". And I do become friends with so many of my customers during and after the sale.

Jason,  Meeting new people and making friends has been one of the most amazing benefits of being in real estate.  I hadn't even thought about that aspect when I entered the profession.  I did consider the flexibility in hours and that was one of the main draws for me aside from my long-standing interest in real estate.  I got a call from another real estate agent in my firm yesterday morning.  We hadn't spoken in over six months, but she called to bend my ear about a frustration she was having with a client.  I thought it was great that she felt completely comfortable to call me and trust me to keep her issue confidential.  We may not run into each other for another six months.  I also have colleagues I can call and do the same to.  I appreciate the support network of other real estate agents, just like you do.  We are very blessed.
