Hi Everyone,

Here is the newest addition to my family. He is a Holand Lop and we got him from a girl who breeds bunnies in Bel Air, Maryland for 4-H. His name is Winchester and his is only 10 weeks old. Winchester loves to be held and is very sweet. This is our first bunny! We keep him inside, but let him hop around in this rabbit run. My son and daughter love to put him on his leash and let him hop around at the bus stop or at soccer practice. He gets quite a few second looks and lots of pettings.

I don't know much about rabbits.  My daughter wants one, but my understanding is they are not very durable around small kids.  My daughter is gentle, but my son is rather heavy handed.

HI Chad,

My son just turned 7 and he is handling the bunny gently and quietly. I really stressed this to him weeks before we got Winchester. My daughter will be 10 next month and loves to put Winchester on the leash.

My daughter will be 6 in October and my son just turned 4.  I'm not worried about the girl, its the boy I worry about.  Would you agree that they need to be a bit older?  They would be the handeler of the pet.

Hi Chad,

Bunnies do need to be treated carefully. If you don't think your son will be able to handle the rabbit gently, I would hold off.

Linda,

Sounds like a nice pet. There must be different breeds, so is this a preferred one as a pet?

Hi Steve,

I am so surprised by the personality a bunny can have. They are very curious and silly. There are many breeds, but this one seems like a nice fit for us. He will only be 4 lbs. There are smaller breeds and much bigger ones, too. He comes from a breeder and has papers. Believe it or not, a pet store wants $80 for one. The 4H breeder wanted $20. Hmm...which one should I chose?

HI!  When my children were pre-teens we had two bunnies.  They were great pets and they were house trained.  They love affection and food!!

I agree, Cathy! If only he wouldn't potty everywhere when I let him hop around, I'd feel a lot better about letting him out more. We have a rabbit run (shown in the picture) so he gets lots of hopping time.

We were given 2 male bunnies when I was a child....or so we thought. 10 tiny bunnies later we had to rethink that!

Your post reminds me of when I was a kid.  My sister and I were active in 4h (mostly my sister) and we had rabbits and guniea pigs for years...

Just be careful, they mulitply like rabbits!

Linda-Congrats on your new addittion, I had rabbits as a kid. In fact just yesterday I took my daughter to the local animal shelter, and they had many rabbits there. Besides asking for a horse, she had asked for a rabbit. We left there with neither. Already have 2 cats and a dog. Hope your family enjoys your new rabbit.
