We have discussed networking in the real world, the biggest mistake made in networking the hard sell, and the best method to successfully network giving value. One major factor trumps all of these ideas if it is not put into play.

Q: What do you think is the most important factor in networking today?

A: The most important factor in networking today is having a consistant and ONGOING networking plan

Why Is a Consistent and Ongoing Plan So Important?

1. Job Loss: If you lose your job or wish to change careers you will have a better chance of moving forward if you are in direct "real time" contact with your network. Nothing worse than trying to pick up the ball after abandoning your efforts with people who you have faded from view with

2. Growth: How else do you grow your network? A ongoing campaign allows you to grow

3. Attrition: happens and you are going to lose some partners to moves, retirement, or other networking partners. If you continue an ongoing campaign you will have the ability to replenish your network

4. Promotion: Keep your name front and center. When people stop networking the result is that their networking partners often think they have retired or left the area. Your name is no longer part of the conversation and that can hurt your business

5. "Advisory Board": Problem solving is more difficult if you have allowed your networking partners to drift away. Your network is your unpaid "advisory board" use it

6. Reputation Management: If you leave the networking arena then you lose track of what is being said and in some cases what is being claimed. Your reputation is worth defending in the real world as well as online

7. Prospect Targeting: If you decide you want to go out on your own and open a brokerage, your networking could help you identify the best Realtors to hire and the ones to avoid

8. Perception Gauge: test the waters at networking meetings and within your network. Get feedback on what people perceive your business to be all about in your area

9. New Announcement: the quickest way to push out new information is through your network

10. Speaking Opportunities: by attending events and meetings you will have the chance to present your information at a meeting. Don't ignore this opportunity as public speaking sets you apart and brings a new differentiating factor into your business

You are correct!  Networking also builds a reputation of character and professionalism.

Excellent advice -- often, we give up when we shouldn't!

Hi Jeff, thanks for the positive feedback and comment. You have a great company and your background is full of practical experience. Do you find your networking experiences to be different now in a Web 2.0 world when you network live?

Randall, thank you for commenting. Tell me what you mean by "reputation of character" I think I know where you are going but I do not want to put words in your mouth or assume I am correct. Thanks again!

Hi Elle, thank you and staying in constant touch is such a big key to winning permanent connections!

Li, thank you for your constant support and joining the conversation!

Good tips, Dean. Public Speaking -- they say that is the number one fear in America. I thought "Death" was number one. I guess some people would rather die than do public speaking. I used to use the double "dip stick" measurement in public speaking --- 1) Is it "Good" and 2) Is it "New".  If it wasn't both, then you were being just a dip.

Kevin, you must be part of the "tough" audience crowd that every speakers fears. Public speaking takes practice and it must become somewhat routine. Preparation is big but then it helps if you love "holding court" with people. Thanks again for joining the conversation!

You have given some great points.  Now implementing them will be my next step.

Hi Richard, follow up is always a good thing but really the idea for me is to make networking a continuous effort for your entire career. Thanks for your comment!

Hi Latonia, implementation is the fun part. I should have added writing as the 11th point. If you want to begin a writing platform try establishing a newsletter, a blog is my first choice. Another idea is to submit an article you have written to ezine. I hope this helps!
